About the Role

At Louis Plung & Company, we are seeking a highly skilled Tax Manager to join our team. As a Tax Manager, you will play a key role in managing multiple tax projects simultaneously, scheduling, staffing, and coordinating workflow. You will be responsible for developing and training staff, making associations to develop new business for the firm, and ensuring compliance with tax law on all tax returns prepared.

Key Responsibilities
  • Manage all tax-related facets of client projects/engagements in an efficient, timely, and professional manner.
  • Plan, schedule, and staff engagements using firm policies and procedures, delegating responsibilities to tax staff when possible to maximize workflow.
  • Maintain contact with clients throughout the year, possessing a thorough knowledge of the client and all facets of their business and industries they serve.
  • Supervise staff and provide on-the-job training, reviewing tax returns and workpapers prepared by staff.
  • Review any changes required or recommendations for improvement with staff, motivating tax staff by providing accurate, specific, and timely feedback and evaluating their strengths, weaknesses, and progress continually.
  • Develop and manage budgets for tax preparation projects and review causes of any significant deviations from predetermined budgets.
  • Prepare engagement letters for approval by partners, work to develop responsible, trained staff by preparing performance evaluations, and maintain high professional and ethical standards.
  • Ensure that clients, partners, and tax directors are kept informed of the status of work in progress as well as all important client developments.
  • Communicate progress of engagements, issues, and resolutions to clients, prepare invoices to clients, and communicate details of fees to clients.
  • Assist in departmental or firm administration functions as assigned by the Tax Director/Tax Partners, able to acquire, develop, and retain clients, and nurture and develop relationships with prospective clients for services performed by the firm.
  • Manage all client engagements, regardless of complexity, in an efficient, timely, and professional manner, communicate with tax directors/partners on a timely basis when issues arise requiring additional expertise, experience, or guidance.
  • Perform complex tax research assignments as requested by Tax Directors/Partners or as determined in order to meet client needs, assist tax staff in developing effective tax research skills, and prepare written tax analyses/tax position papers for clients and for dissemination within the department for training purposes.
  • Communicate with various taxing authorities regarding tax notices, billings, etc., drafting written responses to notices from taxing authorities as well as reviewing written responses drafted by tax staff prior to sending to taxing authorities.
  • Ensure that tax returns prepared by staff are prepared in accordance with the Internal Revenue Code and applicable state laws and regulations.
Requirements
  • 6 years' experience in Public Accounting and 1 year's experience supervising and directing work staff.
  • Strong written and verbal communication skills, ability to perform all professional and administrative functions of subordinates, and prepare staff-level performance reviews.
  • Exhibits strong written and verbal communication skills by disseminating information to staff at all levels of the firm, as well as partners and clients.
  • Demonstrates the capacity to earn clients' respect and trust, providing opportunities to sell existing clients new services and attract new business to the firm.
  • Works with minimal supervision and identifies issues to discuss with partners/tax directors prior to making decisions.
  • Develops responsible, trained staff by assisting in recruiting, developing training aids, and acting as an instructor in professional development programs.
  • Participates in the firm's business development efforts, prepares other projects or duties as assigned by the Tax Director or Tax Partners, and serves as content developer as well as an instructor/presenter in department or firm-wide educational programs.
