The ideal candidates for this role will possess experience in:
- Natural and organic product lines
- Grocery sections such as Frozen, Refrigerated, Bread, and Bulk
- Inventory management, receiving, and pricing

Reporting to: Sales and Operations Manager
- Maintain cleanliness and organization of department areas (aisles, shelves, bins, prep, and storage) in compliance with health regulations.
- Lead inventory assessments.
- Communicate daily tasks and production priorities to department staff.
- Deliver exceptional customer service and maintain open communication with all patrons and owners.
- Participate in establishing sales and labor objectives for the department.
- Attend Management Team meetings.
- Provide regular updates to the Sales and Operations Manager.
- Oversee department personnel.
- Ensure that qualified candidates are recruited and trained in all relevant areas, including job responsibilities, product knowledge, cooperative principles, communication skills, and customer service.
- Organize and lead department meetings and briefings.
- Schedule department staff and manage hours to stay within budget. Fill in for any uncovered shifts.
- Conduct performance evaluations and salary reviews according to store protocols, ensuring that goals are established and assessed.
- Implement disciplinary measures as necessary, adhering to established policies.
- Foster a communicative and supportive culture through consistent goal-setting, mentoring, recognition, and necessary corrective actions.
- Negotiate with suppliers for favorable pricing, terms, quality, and delivery schedules.
- Place orders to maintain adequate inventory levels based on demand.
- Assess vendors and explore new supply sources.
- Receive deliveries according to established protocols, or ensure proper receiving by other staff members. Verify vendor credits and invoice accuracy.
- Calculate pricing to achieve margin objectives.
- Review quarterly and seasonal sales reports, adjusting merchandising and purchasing strategies as needed.
- Plan and maintain visually appealing, well-stocked, rotated, and organized sections, including promotional displays.
- Assist with stocking as time allows and provide direction to stockers within the department.
- Offer product information to customers, staff, newsletters, and other publications.
- Provide prompt, friendly, and courteous customer service, including assistance with special orders.
- Coordinate frequent in-store demonstrations of department products, including samples, handouts, and recipes.
- Utilize category management as a strategic tool.
Qualifications
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous retail leadership experience (3 years preferred), including purchasing responsibilities.
- Must obtain ServSafe Manager food safety certification within 30 days of hire.
- Prior experience in shipping and receiving.
- Able to multitask, perform repetitive bending, standing, and reaching, and lift up to 50 lbs.
- Proficient in basic arithmetic, including counting, addition, and subtraction.
- Computer skills in MS Office: Outlook, Excel, Word.
- Ability to work varied hours and days.
ESSENTIAL PHYSICAL FUNCTIONS: Must be physically capable of occasionally grasping, gripping, pulling, pushing, twisting, and turning as required.
Constant (100%): Walking, standing, talking, hearing, with correctable vision including near acuity and depth perception.
Frequent (34-66%): Bending, stooping, squatting, kneeling, lifting, and carrying up to 20 pounds from floor to waist.
Occasional (1-33%): Working in refrigeration, pushing, pulling, lifting, and carrying up to 50 pounds from floor to waist, lifting up to 100 pounds with assistance from floor to waist, lifting and reaching from waist to shoulder, and lifting and reaching above shoulder height.
