Work Schedule:

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist is required to work Monday through Friday, including weekends and holidays as necessary, on an eight-hour shift basis to support laboratory testing.

The individual will be assigned to one of the following shifts based on laboratory needs:

- Regular Shift: 8:00 AM to 4:30 PM, Monday to Friday, including weekends and holidays.
- Second Shift: 4:00 PM to Midnight, Monday to Friday, including weekends and holidays.
- Third Shift: Midnight to 8:00 AM, Monday to Friday, including weekends and holidays.

Qualifications:

The Clinical Laboratory Specialist must hold certification from the American Society of Clinical Pathologists (ASCP) or American Medical Technologists (AMT), or possess an equivalent certification as a Medical Laboratory Technician (MLT), Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS), or Clinical Laboratory Scientist (CLS) with appropriate training.


Board Certification:

Board certification is not mandatory; however, certification as an MLT, MLS, or CLS by ASCP or AMT is required. An associate degree from an accredited institution in medical laboratory science, medical technology, clinical laboratory, or a related field is necessary.

Completion of a clinical practice program in medical technology and possession of all required licenses, permits, and certifications as mandated by law and this contract is essential.

A minimum of two years of experience in a healthcare environment demonstrating the ability to perform relevant tasks or providing a foundational understanding of the work, such as experience as a medical or clinical laboratory assistant or health technician, is required.

A generalist is defined as a Clinical Laboratory Specialist capable of performing tests across all areas of the Clinical Laboratory, including Chemistry, Blood Bank, Hematology, Urinalysis, and Microbiology.


Service Descriptions:

To successfully fulfill this role, the individual must be able to perform each essential function satisfactorily, with or without reasonable accommodation. Reasonable accommodations may be provided to enable qualified individuals with disabilities to perform essential functions.

Key responsibilities include:

  • Conducting technical laboratory functions encompassing chemistry, hematology, urinalysis, and immunology.
  • Reporting test results in accordance with clinic protocols, alerting providers and/or nurses regarding abnormal findings.
  • Ensuring quality control in specimen collection, maintaining accurate records, and ensuring appropriate sampling.
  • Maintaining laboratory equipment and supplies, including setup, calibration, cleaning, and sterility testing.
  • Adhering to all laboratory policies and OSHA regulations related to safety, cleanliness, and infection control.
  • Performing additional duties as assigned.

Technical Proficiency:
Generalist

Adheres to all established procedures and policies set forth by the Laboratory and Chemistry Department.

Determines proper specimen collection and timely submission.

Processes specimens promptly, following written guidance in laboratory policy for specific turnaround times.

Conducts and reports all tests in accordance with established procedures to meet turnaround time criteria.

Performs quality control procedures on assigned instruments and methods as per Quality Control protocols.

Analyzes and interprets test and control data.

Reports results expediently for stat testing.

Investigates inconsistent results and initiates corrective actions as necessary.

Prepares and loads reagents, calibrators, and quality control materials onto instruments as required.

Employee Health Requirements:
Tuberculosis Testing:
A negative Tuberculosis Skin Test (TST) or interferon-gamma release assays (IGRA) is required. A negative chest radiographic report for active tuberculosis must be provided in cases of positive TST or IGRA results. TST or IGRA testing must be repeated annually.

Measles, Mumps, & Rubella Testing:
Proof of immunity is required for all contract employees.

Varicella:
Proof of immunity is required for all contract employees.

Acellular Pertussis:
Proof of one dose of Tdap vaccination is required for all contract employees.

Influenza:
Proof of annual Influenza vaccination is required for all contract employees unless contraindicated. Employees with medical contraindications must wear a mask during the Influenza season.

COVID-19:
Proof of COVID-19 vaccination is required for all contract employees unless a medical or religious waiver is provided. Employees with approved waivers must provide a negative COVID test weekly at their own expense.
