Overview

The New York State Office of Mental Health is committed to promoting mental health and providing hope and support for individuals with serious mental illness. As a Peer Specialist, you will play a vital role in helping recipients regain control over their lives and recovery processes.

Salary

The estimated annual salary for this position is around $ $55,000-$65,000. This compensation package includes a generous benefits package, including NYS medical, dental, and vision insurance, access to tuition assistance programs, and excellent opportunities for advancement and professional growth.

Job Description

As a Peer Specialist, your primary responsibilities will include:

  • Providing direct mental health services to recipients in various settings
  • Serving as a role model and educating recipients about self-help techniques and group process
  • Teaching effective coping strategies based on personal experience
  • Assisting recipients in clarifying their goals for rehabilitation and recovery
  • Helping them develop support systems

Required Skills and Qualifications

To be successful in this role, you must have demonstrated interpersonal communication skills, the ability to empathize with and relate to recipients of mental health services, and two years of active participation in mental health self-help activities, peer support or peer advocacy programs, or recipient-run organizations or similar experiences.
