Job Summary

The ECMO Specialist is a critical care nurse responsible for the daily operation of the ECMO program under the direction of the ECMO Medical Director. This role requires a high level of expertise in monitoring and troubleshooting the ECMO circuit and related equipment during the management period. The ECMO Specialist must maintain and effectively assess ECMO circuit function and integrity, ensuring accurate and safe administration of blood products and medication delivery for patients ranging from young adults to geriatric.

Key Responsibilities
  • Monitor and troubleshoot the ECMO circuit and related equipment
  • Maintain and assess ECMO circuit function and integrity
  • Administer blood products and medication safely and accurately
  • Work in conjunction with the bedside nurse to ensure patient perfusion, acid-base balance, and hemodynamic stability
  • Manage CRRT when connected in-line with the ECMO circuit
  • Perform quality control, quality assurance, and preventive maintenance
  • Assume responsibility for continuous learning and professional development
  • Participate in quality improvement initiatives and benchmarking
Qualifications
  • Graduate of an accredited School of Nursing
  • Licensure to practice as a Registered Nurse in the State of Florida
  • Three years' experience as a professional nurse, including minimum two years in a critical care and/or hospital emergency department
  • A minimum of 1 year of experience as an ECMO competent professional nurse
  • Maintenance of BLS and ACLS, with PALS required for nurses caring for the pediatric population
  • Achievement of national certification in critical care and the Adult Certified ECMO Specialist (CES-A) or ELSO Adult ECMO Practitioner Certification (E-AEC) within two years of hire
