Job Title: Highway Maintenance Technician

We are seeking a highly skilled and motivated Highway Maintenance Technician to join our team at the Texas Department of Transportation. As a Highway Maintenance Technician, you will be responsible for performing routine transportation operations and maintenance support work, including roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, and traffic control.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Perform routine transportation operations and maintenance support work, including roadway maintenance and repair, light and heavy equipment operation, and traffic control.
  • Assist in identifying, repairing, and installing signs, delineators, mailbox supports, and posts.
  • Provide support to local law enforcement officials at accident sites and assist stranded motorists as required.
  • Assist with traffic control, including placing and gathering cones, warning signs, and barricades.
  • Inspect barricades to ensure compliance with barricade standards.
  • Maintain highways and rights-of-way, including performing roadway repairs, erecting and repairing guard rails, highway markers, and signs, and hauling materials and equipment to job sites.
  • Maintain picnic and rest areas, rights-of-way, maintenance yards, and comfort stations.
  • Move and pick up litter and roadway debris.
  • Mow rights-of-way and picnic and rest areas, and perform plant and landscape maintenance, including trimming trees and brush.
  • Operate light equipment, including front-end loaders, pneumatic rollers, rotary brooms, spreader boxes, backhoes, street sweepers, and mowers.
  • Perform preventive maintenance inspections (PMI), routine servicing, and minor repairs on equipment, and complete various required reports, including timekeeping, equipment forms, inventory, accident forms, and PMI.
  • Sand or clean bridges and roads, post warning signs, help the public, and perform other work as directed during emergency situations, such as floods, tornadoes, hurricanes, snowstorms, accidents, and hazardous material spills.
Requirements:
  • No education required.
  • No experience required for GTT I; 1 year experience for GTT II.
  • Valid Driver License at time of application.
  • Commercial Class "A" Driver License (CDL) with an N Endorsement, and with no restrictions, or have obtained within 120 calendar days from date of employment.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Commercial Driver's License.
Working Conditions:
  • Subject to extreme cold and heat.
  • Subject to noise and vibration.
  • Subject to hazards, including moving vehicles, mechanical parts, high places, heat, or chemicals.
  • Subject to atmospheric conditions, including fumes, odors, dusts, mists, gases, or poor ventilation.
  • Medium work, including lifting up to 50 lbs. at a time and frequently lifting or carrying objects up to 25 lbs.
Conditions of Employment:
  • This job has been identified as physically demanding and will require a pre-employment physical.
  • Must pass a drug test prior to employment for safety impact positions.
  • Must be able to report for duty within 30 minutes of notification on a 24-hour basis to respond to emergency situations.
