Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Maintenance Technician to join our team at the City of Desert Hot Springs. As a key member of our Code Compliance department, you will be responsible for performing a variety of semi-skilled and skilled duties involved in the maintenance and clean-up of the city's main thoroughfares and high traffic areas.

Key Responsibilities
  • Provide clean-up, transportation, and disposal of bio-hazardous and nonhazardous waste and other services as necessary to properly clean and clear encampment sites.
  • Remove and dispose of vegetation in order to gain access to encampment sites and remove any dead or dry plant matter or trees with fallen limbs and branches that may be a fire or safety hazard.
  • Work with law enforcement to ensure camps are clear of occupants prior to commencement of clean-up.
  • Operate tractor, flail mower, backhoe, and other equipment or vehicles; performs routine equipment maintenance.
  • Photograph the encampment site before and after the clean-up to document the condition of the site.
  • May assist in special projects such as tree removal projects, weed abatement, and other physical abatements.
  • Conduct abandoned shopping cart abatement.
  • Develops and implements effective public education strategies concerning the codes and ordinances; assists in carrying out the City's public outreach strategies; participate in neighborhood associations abatement initiatives.
  • Represents the City with dignity, integrity, and a spirit of cooperation in all relationships with staff and the public.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent and a combination of education and experience equivalent to two years customer service experience along and two years experience with encampment related abatement that includes the removal of hazardous and nonhazardous materials, removal and disposal of debris and shrubbery; using heavy equipment; or any combination of training and experience that provides the desired knowledge and abilities necessary to perform this work.
  • Valid California driver's license with a good driving record at the time of appointment.
Working Conditions

The work environment characteristics described here represent those employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the employee will be exposed to unpleasant elements such as dust, fumes, odors, dampness, high noise levels. Job sites may be in heavy foliage, steep embankments, near roadways and other locations requiring alertness to environment and pre-planning to prevent injury or illness. The employee will work in all types of outdoor weather conditions. The noise level in the work environment is usually quiet in the office and moderate to loud in the field. The employee may be on call and occasionally work evenings and weekends and holidays. Required to wear personal protective equipment (PPE) appropriate for job assignments.
