About the Role

The Indiana Department of Transportation is seeking a highly motivated and detail-oriented Highway Maintenance Laborer to join our team. As a Highway Maintenance Laborer, you will play a critical role in ensuring the safety and efficiency of Indiana's transportation infrastructure.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform general maintenance tasks on highways and interstates, including picking up trash and debris, filling potholes, and maintaining drainage systems.
  • Assist with traffic control, especially during emergency road closures.
  • Operate basic highway maintenance and traffic equipment to maintain, repair, and clean highways and rights-of-way.
  • Perform winter operations duties, including snow and ice removal.
  • Participate in emergency response activities, such as clean-up, traffic control, lane closures, and barricade placement.
  • Perform regular inspections and routine equipment maintenance, including minor repairs, preventative maintenance, refueling, and pre-trip inspections.
  • Perform miscellaneous labor tasks as needed.
Requirements
  • A valid commercial driver's license (CDL) or ability to obtain within 90 days.
  • Pass and submit to a drug test as a condition of employment.
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds.
  • Ability to perform physical activities, such as lifting, dragging, stooping, standing, and walking for long periods of time.
  • Must be able to endure exposure to inclement weather.
  • Ability to operate specialty traffic equipment, such as bucket trucks and paint equipment.
  • Ability to follow directions and work as part of a team.
