Position: Timber Harvest Operations Specialist

Reports to: Senior Forester

FLSA Status: Exempt

Position Summary: The Timber Harvest Operations Specialist will be tasked with the strategic planning and execution of timber extraction activities, ensuring adherence to sustainable forestry practices, environmental standards, and project goals.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Formulate and execute timber extraction strategies based on forest inventory assessments, ecological evaluations, and restoration objectives.
  • Oversee site preparation processes, including the construction of access roads, tree marking, and boundary delineation, to facilitate safe and effective timber extraction.
  • Supervise all phases of timber extraction, including tree felling, skidding, hauling, and log loading, while maintaining compliance with safety regulations and environmental guidelines.
  • Manage agreements with logging contractors and subcontractors, ensuring adherence to project specifications, quality benchmarks, and timelines.
  • Guarantee compliance with environmental regulations and best management practices throughout timber extraction, focusing on erosion control, water quality preservation, and habitat protection.
  • Monitor timber inventory, track log volumes, and maintain precise records of harvested timber for reporting and analytical purposes.
  • Coordinate maintenance and repair of logging equipment to ensure safe and efficient operations of machinery and vehicles.
  • Foster a culture of safety and accountability among harvesting teams, subcontractors, and project stakeholders, conducting regular safety training and inspections.
  • Implement quality assurance measures to ensure the proper handling, processing, and transportation of harvested timber, meeting industry standards and client expectations.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree in forestry, natural resource management, or a related discipline is preferred.
  • Minimum of 3 years of experience in timber extraction operations, ideally within a restoration forestry or sustainable forestry framework.
  • Comprehensive technical knowledge of timber extraction equipment, methodologies, and best practices.
  • Proficiency in forest inventory and GIS software for planning and mapping purposes.
  • Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal abilities.
  • Capacity to work both independently and collaboratively within a dynamic team setting.
  • Dedication to environmental stewardship and sustainable forestry principles.
