Job Summary

We are seeking a skilled Body Shop Mechanic to join our team at the City of Montebello, CA. As a key member of our Transit Department, you will be responsible for examining damaged vehicles and transit buses, estimating repair costs, and performing repairs in accordance with repair manuals.

Key Responsibilities
  • Examine damaged vehicles and transit buses to determine the extent of damage and estimate repair costs
  • Read design specifications and review instructions to determine the type of repair and tools required
  • Perform repairs using hand tools and power tools, including fabrication and modification tasks
  • Read inspection reports and review instructions to determine the type of repair and tools required
  • Estimate cost of repair based on familiarity with standard parts, costs, and labor rates
  • Read design specifications or examine sample parts to determine fabrication procedures and machines and tools required
  • Install, replace, or repair parts such as body panels, doors, interior and exterior trim
  • Remove rivets and other fasteners to facilitate removal of defective part using a power drill and punch
  • Reinstall repaired or replacement parts for subsequent riveting or welding using clamps and wrenches
  • Position and secure bonded structure in fixture or bonding form
  • Scribe around repair area and cuts out defective or damaged section using power tools and equipment
  • Weld with gas and arc equipment to replace part to frame
  • Align frames after repairing
  • Repair damaged fiberglass bodies using pneumatic tools
  • Prepare vehicles surfaces for paint application by removing parts, masking areas and sanding
  • Paint vehicles surfaces through spray application or other means
  • Fabricate and assemble metal products
  • Maintain the shop and work area in a clean, orderly and neat condition
  • Maintain record of work performed and parts used
  • Provide emergency road service to disabled vehicles as required
Requirements
  • Possession of an appropriate California driver's license
  • Candidate must obtain their California Class B permit within 2 weeks of employment and obtain their California Class B license within 6 months of employment
  • Possession of a personal toolbox, basic hand tool set, and air tools
  • Training and Experience: Any combination of training and experience which would likely provide the required knowledge and abilities is qualifying
