About the Job

We are seeking a highly skilled Carpenter to join our team at the University of Maine System. As a Carpenter, you will be responsible for performing skilled rough and finish carpentry work in constructing, remodeling, repairing, and maintaining buildings and facilities.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform interior and exterior carpentry work for construction, remodeling, repair, and maintenance of the physical assets of the campus.
  • Perform both rough and finish carpentry, including erecting, dismantling, and working from scaffolding and at heights.
  • Read and understand building drawings and diagrams and may produce sketches as needed.
  • Construct furniture, such as benches and picnic tables.
  • Provide maintenance and upkeep of shop tools and equipment using the appropriate methods of performing such preventive maintenance tasks.
  • Work independently with minimal direct supervision.
  • May perform some components of estimating carpentry jobs.
  • Operate hand and power tools.
  • Requisition materials.
  • Clean, sharpen, and perform preventative maintenance on tools and equipment.
  • Respond to emergency calls and perform troubleshooting as needed.
  • Participate in training and adhere to all relevant local, state, and federal safety and regulatory requirements and policies and all University policies and procedures.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D.).
  • Valid Maine driver's license.
  • Procedures for operating, inspecting, maintaining, and storing assigned equipment.
  • Providing exemplary customer service.
  • Operating assigned tools and motorized equipment safely and effectively.
  • Performing manual labor for extended periods of time.
  • Identifying equipment malfunctions.
  • At least 3 years' experience in the carpentry trade.
  • Performing cleaning and maintenance of equipment.
  • Maintaining records and reports, as required.
  • Must be able to comfortably work in tight areas, from heights and from a squatting/stooping position.
  • Communication, interpersonal skills as applied to interaction with coworkers, supervisor, students, the general public, etc. sufficient to exchange or convey information and to give and receive work direction.
  • Positions in this class typically require: Ability to perform physical activities that require talking, hearing, seeing and considerable and repetitive use of arms and legs and moving entire body, such as reaching, standing, walking, fingering, grasping, feeling, climbing, lifting, bending, balancing, walking, stooping, and handling of materials. Heavy work: The ability to lift up to 50 pounds frequently, and/or in excess of 20 pounds of force constantly to move objects. Lifting and exerting forces more than 50 pounds requires assistance by other employee(s) or mechanical assistance. Incumbents may be subjected to moving mechanical parts, vibrations, fumes, odors, dusts, gases, poor ventilation, wetness, humidity, fire, chemicals, oils, extreme temperatures, difficult driving conditions, inadequate lighting, workspace restrictions, intense noises and travel.
