Job Summary

The Pharmacy Technician I plays a vital role in ensuring the safe and effective delivery of medication management across all dimensions of care. As a member of the healthcare team at The Rector & Visitors of the University of Virginia, this individual collaborates with other team members to provide optimal care. The Technician accepts responsibility, authority, and accountability for management and provision of care in accordance with current policies and procedures.

Key Responsibilities

Fill, prepare, and deliver medications under the supervision of a licensed pharmacist/licensed independent practitioner.
Consistently follows policy and procedures
Ensuring adequate supplies are available for continuous patient care
Triages and escalates any questions or issues outside the pharmacy technician's scope of practice to the staff pharmacist or supervisor as needed
Use appropriate systems for processing of patient information
Ensure quality is maintained according to departmental and legal requirements
Appropriately operate pharmacy equipment
Maintains considerable knowledge of medication names (both trade and generic) and their doses, routes of administration,
Demonstrate patient interview skills and strong written and communication skills with other healthcare professionals.

Requirements

High School Diploma or GED required.
No experience required; 1 year of relevant experience preferred Refer to the Life Support Training Policy for additional details.
Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Trainee Registration required, Commonwealth of Virginia Pharmacy Technician Registration preferred.
Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) or Pharmacy Technician Certification Exam (ExCPT) preferred.

Additional Skills/Requirements

State Registration and/or evidence of renewal is required for both Pharmacists and Technicians fifteen days prior to expiration and Technicians are required to be either certified through Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB), National Healthcareer Association (NHA) or be actively enrolled in pharmacy school or be active in Foreign Pharmacy Graduate Equivalency Examination (FPGEE) or Foreign Pharmacy Equivalency Certification (FPGEC).
Considerable knowledge and application of basic math skills, including ratio and proportion relationships; strong verbal and written communication skills, ability to follow verbal and written instructions.
Basic technology skills. Other duties as outline in UVA Health Northern VA & Culpeper and facility specific policies and procedures. Ability to drive/travel to multiple facilities/locations as needed. Ability to work as part of a high performing, change ready and resilient team.

Physical Demands

The job requires constant sitting, standing, walking, and bending/stooping. Frequent repetitive body movements. Proficient communicative, auditory, and visual skills. Attention to detail and ability to write legibly. Ability to lift/push/pull up to 100 lbs. occasionally. For any weight over 35 lbs. use Safe Handling Equipment.
