Key Responsibilities

The Satellite Communication Systems Operator-Maintainer is responsible for:
  • Transmitting, receiving, and documenting messages in accordance with military protocols;
  • Encoding and decoding classified communications;
  • Operating telephone switchboards;
  • Installing, maintaining, and managing communication devices;
  • Monitoring and responding to urgent communication requests.

Advanced Responsibilities

Advanced Satellite Communication Systems Operator-Maintainers also:
  • Provide technical guidance to fellow service members;
  • Identify and report instances of electronic jamming and deception;
  • Implement appropriate electronic countermeasures.

Job Duties Include

• Conducting both stressed and unstressed network operations

• Maintaining satellite communication equipment and related devices

• Preparing system and equipment-related documentation and reports

Skills Development

• Proficiency in various communication technologies

• Working with encrypted codes

• Maintenance and management of communication devices

Essential Skills

• A keen interest in communication technology and satellite systems

• Ability to perform under pressure, both physically and mentally

Compensation While Learning
Instead of incurring costs to acquire these skills, you will earn a salary while you learn. In the Army National Guard, you will gain valuable expertise while receiving a regular paycheck and qualifying for educational assistance.

Training Requirements

Training for a Satellite Communication Systems Operator-Maintainer includes 10 weeks of Basic Training to learn fundamental soldiering skills, followed by 18 weeks of Advanced Individual Training (AIT). This training consists of both classroom instruction and field exercises under simulated combat conditions.
