Job Title: Respiratory Therapist

Be a part of a world-class academic healthcare system at The University of Chicago Medicine as a Registered Respiratory Therapist (RRT) at our Harvey, Illinois location. In this role, you will work with physicians and nursing staff to assess, implement, and perform respiratory care procedures for our patients.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain departmental productivity and efficient operation of the department per established standards.
  • Exhibit timely and satisfactory completion of patient assignments with minimal assistance.
  • Incurs no overtime unless requested and approved by lead therapist.
  • Explain procedures and protocols of the therapy to the patient and family members.
  • Maintain a one-on-one relationship with patients during the course of care.
  • Follow proper identification procedures prior to giving care.
  • Read prescriptions prepared by physicians to determine indications for treatment.
  • Determine the most appropriate modality of respiratory care for patients and inform physicians when indicated.
  • Notify nurses or physicians of any adverse reactions.
  • Instruct patients in proper breathing techniques.
  • Maintain information in patients' charts and department records at all times.
  • Competent in radial and capillary blood gas punctures and proficient in blood gas interpretation.
  • Utilize all monitoring and diagnostic equipment by following established procedures.
Requirements:
  • Completion of an AMA-approved RRT program.
  • Basic Life Support Certification through The American Heart Association.
  • Must achieve Certified Respiratory Therapist (RRT) credential from The National Board for Respiratory Care within 6 months of hire.
  • Copy of academic diploma or transcript.
  • Therapist must have NBRC RRT credentials to be trained for critical care.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Professionally minded, ambitious to advance in profession, tact and courtesy essential.

Must comply with The University of Chicago Medicine's COVID-19 Vaccination requirement as a condition of employment. If you have already received the vaccination, you must provide proof as part of the pre-employment process. This is in addition to your compliance with the Flu Vaccination requirement as well. Medical and religious exemptions will be considered consistent with applicable law. Lastly, a pre-employment physical, drug screening, and background check are also required for all employees prior to hire.
