DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS:
This position is part of a flexibly staffed series, where incumbents are expected to undertake progressively complex tasks, necessitating specialized knowledge pertinent to the department's functions.
Assessment Technician I:
This entry-level role requires close supervision during training, allowing for gradual independence as skills develop. Incumbents will focus on routine tasks while cultivating fundamental assessment capabilities and taking on key responsibilities.
Assessment Technician II:
This intermediate-level position expects incumbents to perform basic tasks autonomously. As they gain experience, they will tackle more challenging assignments and must develop proficiency in property tax systems and assessment practices.
Key Responsibilities:
- Conduct clerical and technical work in maintaining county assessment records.
- Manage records involving ownership, addresses, property locations, and sales data.
- Process changes such as parcel splits, address modifications, and property statements.
- Verify appraisal calculations for accuracy.
- Analyze legal documents to identify events affecting tax assessments.
- Handle exemptions and corrections to assessment records.
- Collaborate with various stakeholders regarding assessment operations.
- Provide detailed explanations of assessments to taxpayers.
Minimum Qualifications:
Knowledge:
- Operation of standard office equipment and software applications, including Microsoft Office and Adobe.
- Understanding of state revenue and taxation laws relevant to assessment processes.
Skills and Abilities:
- Operate office equipment and learn new software applications.
- Work collaboratively towards shared goals and maintain effective working relationships.
- Read and interpret legal documents and perform mathematical functions accurately.
Training and Experience:
- Equivalent to high school graduation.
- Assessment Technician I: No prior experience required.
- Assessment Technician II: Two years of experience in a similar role, demonstrating knowledge of assessment operations.
Special Requirements:
- Valid California driver's license.
- New technicians must obtain a temporary Assessment Analyst certificate and achieve full certification within the probationary period.
