Pharmacy Technician Job Description

Under the direction of a licensed pharmacist, the Pharmacy Technician will play a vital role in preparing, packaging, and labeling medications for patients. This position requires strong attention to detail, excellent communication skills, and the ability to work in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Prepare and package medications according to prescriber orders and established policies and procedures.
  • Label and package medications accurately and efficiently.
  • Deliver medications to patient care areas and maintain a sterile environment.
  • Process and deliver controlled substances to patient care areas, maintaining accurate inventory and documentation.
  • Collect and return unused and expired medications from patient care areas to the pharmacy for proper processing.
  • Perform related charge functions and respond to requests and inquiries from hospital employees and customers.
Requirements:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent.
  • Full pharmacy licensure or temporary licensure with the State of Michigan, with full licensure obtained within one year of hire.
  • Prior pharmacy experience and/or completion of formal pharmacy technician training, including knowledge of medical and pharmaceutical terminologies.
  • Certification is preferred.
Skills and Abilities:
  • Visual acuity and manual dexterity to operate an online computer keyboard and typewriter to maintain patient profiles, capture charges, enter prescription data, and access patient information.
  • Interpersonal and communication skills to effectively interact with physicians, patient care staff, and other department personnel and patients.
  • Mathematical ability to perform calculations, requiring knowledge of the metric system and use of a calculator.
  • Ability to transport medication delivery carts, lift approximately 10-20 pounds, bend, and move stock (6-10% of work time).
  • Ability to frequently (21-50% of work time) lift and transport medications such as IV solutions (exerting a force of up to 60 pounds).
  • Ability to stand for extended periods of time and move to and from various units/patient rooms of the hospital almost constantly (more than 80% of work time) to dispense medications, at times in cramped quarters.
