Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and certified Lifeguard to join our team at the YMCA of Memphis & the Mid-South. As a Lifeguard, you will be responsible for maintaining a safe and enjoyable environment for our members and guests. This is a part-time position that requires flexibility and a strong commitment to customer service.

Key Responsibilities
  • Maintain active surveillance of the pool area and respond to emergency situations in accordance with YMCA policies and procedures.
  • Perform equipment checks and ensure that all necessary equipment is available and in good working condition.
  • Check the pool for hazardous conditions and report any issues to the Aquatics Director or Aquatics Coordinator.
  • Perform chemical testing and take appropriate action as needed.
  • Attend all staff meetings and in-service training sessions.
  • Participate in VAT (vigilance awareness training) as directed by the Aquatics Director, YMCA, and Ellis and Associates.
  • Assist with various camps and programs as assigned.
  • Perform various opening and closing duties as described on the daily to-do list.
  • Perform various maintenance duties as directed to maintain a clean and safe facility.
Requirements
  • Minimum age of 15.
  • Certifications: CPR for the Professional Rescuer, AED, Basic First Aid, and Emergency Oxygen.
  • Current Red Cross Lifeguard Certification or equivalent.
  • Ability to maintain certification-level of physical and mental readiness.
  • Must demonstrate lifeguard skills in accordance with YMCA and Red Cross standards.
Work Environment and Physical Demands
  • Hear noises and distress signals in the aquatic environment.
  • Must be able to remain alert and with no lapses of consciousness.
  • Must be able to sit or stand for extended periods of time.
  • Ability to perform strenuous physical tasks necessary for a water rescue.
  • See and observe all sections of an assigned zone or area of responsibility.
  • Ability to perceive, identify, and respond to signs of distress.
