Job Overview
- Conduct daily operations in Echocardiography, which includes performing Echocardiograms, providing preliminary interpretations, and covering various sites and shifts, including on-call duties.
- Relocation assistance is available for candidates moving from over 50 miles away.

- This is a full-time role, requiring 40 hours per week.
Responsibilities
Level I Responsibilities
Demonstrates expertise by executing routine and emergency echocardiograms, including but not limited to 2D, 3D, Doppler, Transesophageal, and Stress Echocardiograms, as per physician requests and established protocols.
- Provides echocardiography services across all necessary locations, working varied shifts, weekends, and fulfilling emergency call coverage as scheduled.
- Operates essential equipment to perform all required procedures and achieve optimal diagnostic recordings; utilizes ancillary devices such as selected transducers and digital networking systems.
- Maintains equipment functionality, performing minor adjustments and repairs as needed.
- Conducts routine cleaning and preventive maintenance, reporting any equipment malfunctions to the echo lab manager.
- Reviews patient medical records to gather history and necessary information for diagnostic procedures.
- Prepares preliminary reports for Cardiologist review, including comparisons with previous studies.
- Engages in quality improvement initiatives; evaluates procedure outcomes for technical quality and accuracy; maintains appropriate logs and records.
- Reviews departmental performance against established goals, implementing changes to improve outcomes.
- Upholds patient confidentiality and instructs students, fellows, nurses, or health personnel as requested.
- Communicates technical and patient care-related information according to established protocols and timelines.
- Participates in Echo Lab meetings and conferences, ensuring ongoing education and professional development.
- Fosters a collaborative and supportive work environment within the department.
Level II Responsibilities
Actively engages in patient testing, performing routine, urgent, and emergent echocardiography requests as outlined in the Level I job description.
- Delivers advanced cardiac ultrasound services and procedures, utilizing independent judgment for real-time and off-line manipulation of echocardiographic images for analysis.
- Assists physicians with echocardiography-guided studies to facilitate complex procedures and mitigate associated risks.
- Serves as a resource for Cardiac Sonographers and Cardiology Fellows, aiding in pre/post-procedure activities and preliminary image reviews.
- Acts as a preceptor for onboarding new Cardiac Sonographers, providing departmental orientation and education.
Level III Responsibilities
Clinical Focus: Performs advanced cardiac ultrasound services and procedures, including congenital assessments, myocardial mechanics, 3D imaging, and stress echocardiography, utilizing independent judgment.
- Functions as an expert resource, providing in-service education and guidance to other cardiac sonographers regarding procedure performance and preliminary interpretations.
- Conducts quality assurance to ensure all necessary echocardiography data are obtained based on clinical history and presentation.
- Develops and ensures consistent implementation of examination protocols.
- Provides educational sessions and case reviews for staff cardiac sonographers in collaboration with the Echocardiography Technical Manager regarding new techniques and methods.
- Maintains up-to-date laboratory policies and procedures.
- Collaborates with the Technical Manager and Medical Director for annual reviews or necessary revisions of clinical policies and procedures specific to Echocardiography.
- Ensures compliance with all ICAEL requirements.
- Organizes and prepares ICAEL applications to maintain accredited status.
- Education Focus: Participates as a Lead Clinical Instructor in the Echocardiography Department.
- Engages in clinical education for students, residents, and/or fellows, particularly in physics and image acquisition.
- Provides technical support in research studies on new echocardiography techniques and technologies initiated by Duke and other institutions.
- Assists the Echocardiography Technical Manager with quality measures and outcome data to ensure a high-standard echocardiography lab.
- Clinical Lead Focus: Supervisory Responsibility-Yes. Provides support for the Echocardiography service in the absence of the manager.
- Responsible for supervising, directing, coaching, and mentoring assigned staff. Evaluates staff performance, provides feedback, and monitors quality at each site.
- Directs orientation and provides guidance to enhance staff morale. Instructs and educates visiting students, technologists, and physicians about departmental procedures and functions.
- Ensures compliance with departmental and institutional policies and regulations. Assists with personnel functions, including hiring and evaluations.
- Supports the Technical Manager in evaluating and selecting capital equipment.
- Promotes professional growth and development through participation in educational programs and workshops.
- Maintains knowledge of available resources for staff development and continuing education.
Education: Graduate of an accredited Diagnostic Medical Sonography or Cardiovascular Technology Program is required (ARDMS certification may substitute).
Experience:No additional experience is required beyond the educational and certification prerequisites.
Level I: Must obtain ARDMS or CCI certifications in Echocardiography within 18 months of employment.
Level II: Minimum of two years' experience as a Sonographer.
Level III: A minimum of four years' experience in the specialty modality for promotion.
Degrees, Licensures, Certifications:ARDMS/CCI Certification in Echocardiography is required.
