Position Overview

The New York Public Library (NYPL) has been a cornerstone of free access to literature, information, and educational resources for over a century. NYPL's community libraries across the Bronx, Manhattan, and Staten Island are evolving into dynamic centers of learning and engagement, serving as vital community hubs that offer much more than just books.

The Library is on the lookout for dedicated Youth Services Librarians or Specialists who will inspire young adults aged 12-18 to become innovative thinkers, avid readers, proficient researchers, and savvy information users. Ideal candidates will exemplify these essential traits.

Key Responsibilities
  • Deliver reference assistance and resource suggestions utilizing print, media, and digital platforms.
  • Collaborate with the Youth Educational Services Department to design, promote, and implement engaging programs that foster literacy and a passion for reading, addressing the expressed and anticipated needs of the community's youth through arts, STEM initiatives, summer reading programs, and various activities both within the Library and in the broader community.
  • Work alongside the collection development team to curate and sustain a diverse, up-to-date Young Adult collection that meets community needs.
  • Encourage young adults to interact with the collection in ways that resonate with their interests and help them discover new ones.
  • Conduct outreach and establish partnerships with local organizations, schools, and community groups focused on young adults to promote library services, collections, specialized programs, and resources aimed at enhancing reading skills.
  • Foster digital literacy and provide age-appropriate technology training to young adults.
  • Create and manage content for social media platforms, including Library blogs and various social media channels.
  • Oversee the layout and aesthetics of the Young Adult space, ensuring it is a safe and welcoming environment filled with relevant resources.
  • Guide library staff in the preparation and execution of Young Adult programs.
  • Assist with circulation, management of fines and fees, reservations, and daily operational procedures.
  • May assume responsibility for the facility, staff, and operations in the absence of the Library Manager.
  • Maintain a current understanding of trends in Young Adult literature, youth services, and the profession through various professional development opportunities.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Required Education, Experience & SkillsEducation & Experience
  • Master's degree in Library and Information Studies from an ALA accredited institution.
  • Public Librarian's Professional Certificate issued by the State of New York.
Skills
  • Strong dedication to public service and the ability to engage effectively with a diverse patron base.
  • Experience in designing and implementing a variety of innovative programs for young adults.
  • Knowledge and appreciation of Young Adult literature, audiovisual materials, and digital resources that contribute to a balanced and relevant youth collection.
  • Experience in developing, maintaining, and promoting Young Adult collections.
  • Proven ability to build partnerships with local organizations and educational institutions to better serve community users.
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral, and written communication skills.
  • Demonstrated ability to work collaboratively as part of a team.
  • Strong organizational and planning capabilities, with the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously.
  • Proficient in computer and related technology skills, including MS Office Suite, Google applications, and various digital devices.
  • Knowledge of online searching, social media, reference resources, and databases.
  • Willingness to learn new skills and adapt to a changing work environment.
Managerial/Supervisory Responsibilities
  • May temporarily oversee library operations in the absence of the Library Manager.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Familiarity with emerging library technologies and trends in services and programming for young adults in urban public libraries.
  • Preferred Language: Spanish.
