Key Responsibilities

  • Acts as a recognized authority within the Bureau, providing expert guidance in the formulation of new policies and procedures for managing records.
  • Leads national efforts to transition Bureau paper records to digital formats, enhancing public access to information, minimizing physical storage expenses, and supporting a mobile workforce.
  • Functions as a backup to the Bureau Records Officer and co-chairs the Bureau Records Management Board, ensuring that all divisions, states, and centers are executing appropriate strategies for record maintenance.
  • Promotes the exchange of best practices across the Department and the Bureau to establish effective and efficient records management protocols.
  • Serves as the technical authority for the implementation and development of records management policies, providing leadership across the Bureau.
  • Interprets directives from the Department and other higher-level organizations, including the Office of Management and Budget (OMB), Department of the Interior, and National Archives and Records Administration (NARA).
  • Maintains a thorough understanding of the General Records Schedule published by NARA and represents the Bureau in collaboration with senior officials from DOI and NARA.
  • Works closely with the Records Officer, Privacy Officer, and Data Administrator to create integrated policies and procedures addressing data management and privacy in relation to records management.
  • Keeps updated on the latest developments in records management and administration, including participation in relevant forums, conferences, and webinars.
  • Provides technical guidance and specialized training to staff and field offices on all aspects of records management from accession to disposition.
  • Ensures the establishment of quality control and assurance procedures in alignment with national standards.
  • Conducts and thoroughly documents logical information modeling, assisting others in defining and documenting business processes.
