Position DescriptionRAND provides guidance to a range of national security clients, including various Department of Defense entities, U.S. allies and partners, and foundations, on policy-level decisions related to security, intelligence, and military strategy.
Working within interdisciplinary teams, RAND Policy Researchers utilize both quantitative and qualitative methodologies to analyze policy challenges of national and international significance and convey the outcomes of these analyses to decision-makers.
For this role, RAND is looking to recruit an authority in defense and security matters.Key responsibilities include developing project concepts and collaborating with potential project sponsors to secure support, leading research initiatives, and offering strategic and tactical counsel to senior officials, including those in the Department of Defense.
QualificationsDefense and Security Researchers should possess extensive expertise in analyzing security and military policies, demonstrated through experience in governmental, academic, or policy research environments.
Applicants should exhibit strong research and analytical skills, comprehensive knowledge of the policy landscape, exceptional strategic leadership, and organizational management abilities, as well as the capacity to provide intellectual guidance for defense and security-related policy research.
All research roles at RAND necessitate excellent analytical skills and the ability to communicate effectively in English, both verbally and in writing; the capability to collaborate effectively as part of a multidisciplinary team; and a strong commitment to RAND's core values of quality and objectivity.
Senior roles require the ability to generate new project ideas and garner support from potential sponsors, mentor and develop junior staff, lead and manage interdisciplinary teams, establish project standards, monitor progress, and communicate interim and final results to the RAND community and policy-making audiences.
Education RequirementsPh.
D. or a Master's degree with 5+ years of relevant research experience is required in one of the social or physical sciences or another discipline closely related to the topics outlined in the Position Description above.
ExperienceExperience in one of the following areas is strongly preferred: gaming, security cooperation, force development.
Security Clearance
A security clearance may be necessary for certain projects; U.S. Citizenship is required to obtain a security clearance. An active Secret or interim Secret clearance is preferred.
Writing Sample Required
Two writing samples are required for this position. Pieces that demonstrate rigorous use of evidence and logic, which are either solo or lead authored, are preferred.
Salary Range
Associate Researcher:
$94,800 - $148,350
Full Researcher:
$109,600 - $181,075
Senior Researcher:
$145,500 - $251,175
RAND considers various factors when determining an offer, including but not limited to the specific role and associated responsibilities; a candidate's work experience, education/training, skills, expertise; and internal equity.
Successful candidates will be offered employment as an Associate, Full, or Senior researcher in a specific title, as determined by the candidate's education and experience.
The salary range includes base pay plus RAND's sabbatical pay (which provides additional compensation above base pay when vacation is taken).
