Job Summary

UIC Government Services and the Bowhead Family of Companies is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Lead Transportation Manager to lead a convoy of buses to and from training areas in support of the Logistics Readiness Center (LRC) at Fort Jackson, SC.

Key Responsibilities
  • Lead a convoy of buses to and from training areas, communicating with base command for instructions and route deviations, providing safety briefs, and mediating problems to ensure the transport of trainees is completed.
  • Drive motor vehicles ranging in size from sedans to 44-passenger buses on scheduled short trips and transporting personnel from one place to another.
  • Observe established time schedules and follow prescribed routes and speed limits.
  • Control the loading and unloading of passengers and/or equipment, ensuring the maximum capacity is observed and only authorized personnel are transported.
  • Complete vehicle utilization records, including miles operated, hours operated, POL added, and number of passengers transported.
  • Complete driver's accident reports when necessary.
  • Report any misbehavior of passengers on the bus.
  • Perform driver's maintenance in accordance with established regulations.
  • Drive water trucks and van trucks of less than 4-ton capacity, with up to four-wheel drive, to transport drinking water, articles, and materials throughout the post.
  • Observe established time schedules and determine the most practical and safe routes, observing speed limits in various areas and on highways.
  • Supervise the loading and unloading of cargo, ensuring that the maximum capacity regulations are observed and only authorized cargo is transported.
  • Complete vehicle utilization records, including miles and hours operated, and service records.
  • Complete driver's accident reports when necessary.
  • Perform driver's maintenance in accordance with established regulations.
  • Perform maintenance, upkeep of the physical work building, and other tasks assigned by the Supervisor.
  • Drive other vehicles for which qualified and licensed when required by the workload.
  • Keep vehicles clean, inside and outside, at all times.
Requirements
  • Must possess a Commercial Driver's License (CDL) with passenger endorsements and other endorsements that will allow the operation of buses exceeding 26,000 pounds (gross vehicle weight) and the operation of liquid transporters with a capacity of 1,000 gallons or more.
  • High school diploma or GED required.
  • At least two (2+) years of experience driving with a CDL preferred.
  • A familiarity with the military is preferred but not required.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with all levels of employees and outside contacts.
  • Strong interpersonal skills and good judgment with the ability to work alone or as part of a team.
Physical Demands
  • Frequently lifts items weighing up to 30 pounds independently and occasionally lifts up to 65 pounds with assistance.
  • Must be able to stand, walk, and sit for prolonged amounts of time.
  • Uses arms, hands, and fingers for pulling and positioning materials, sewing, and using tools such as shears.
  • The operator is required to work outside and is occasionally exposed to all weather conditions while loading and unloading vehicles.
  • Drives in all types of traffic and weather and is exposed to the possibility of serious accidents.
  • The operator is subject to cuts, bruises, and broken bones as a result of accidents while driving or when loading and unloading vehicles.
