About the Role

The University of Michigan-Flint is seeking a seasoned professional to serve as the Director of Facilities and Operations. This key leadership position is responsible for overseeing the daily operations of the university's campus facilities and grounds.

Key Responsibilities
  • Leadership and Management: Provide strategic leadership and management oversight for a team of approximately 80 staff and student employees, fostering a culture that promotes a safe and healthy working environment.
  • Strategic Planning: Participate in campus and business strategic planning efforts, translating and implementing adopted strategies, policies, and practices to operational completions.
  • Facilities Management: Deliver high-quality campus support services, emphasizing sustainability, including construction and renovation project management, architecture and engineering, environment, health, and safety services, grounds maintenance, repair, and maintenance, custodial services, shipping and receiving, mail services, and inventory control.
  • Financial Management: Manage a $5.9 million general fund budget, plus an additional $2+ million in deferred maintenance and special project budgets.
  • Staff Development: Select, develop, and evaluate staff, addressing performance issues and promoting professional growth.
  • Interpersonal Relationships: Manage relationships, processes, activities, and operations across the Facilities and Operations department, the Business and Finance area, the entire Flint campus, the University of Michigan, and the Flint community.
  • Integrity and Ethics: Demonstrate honesty, truthfulness, and integrity, building trust through sincere, respectful, and fair interactions and dealings with others.
  • Collective Bargaining: Administer and manage several collective bargaining agreements, including AFSCME and various skilled trade unions.
Requirements
  • Education: Bachelor's degree in a relevant area, such as engineering, architecture, or management.
  • Experience: 10 or more years of progressively responsible experience in facilities management, including 8 or more years of supervisory and administrative experience.
  • Skills and Knowledge: Demonstrated experience in leading a workforce, administering collective bargaining agreements, developing and managing financial budgets, and successfully managing programs and projects in a diverse and complex organization.
  • Facilities Management: Knowledge and experience with facility preservation, deferred maintenance, renovation, capital project planning, design, and new construction.
  • Computer Skills: Proficiency in computer software, including Office or Google Suite, and experience using conferencing software, such as Google.
  • Safety Compliance: Knowledge of safety compliance and regulations.
  • Physical Asset Management: Knowledge of physical asset management.
