Job Summary

The University of Chicago seeks a skilled Risk Management Claims Specialist to join our team in the Office of Risk Management. As a key member of our team, you will assist in the management of the University and affiliates' property, liability, and workers' compensation claims and other related risk management claims and processes.

Responsibilities
  • Collect and analyze incident information to identify potential risks and develop strategies to mitigate them.
  • Manage the self-insured workers' compensation program, including application processing and claims investigation.
  • Coordinate claim review meetings and ensure compliance with federal and state regulations.
  • Oversee the maintenance of sufficient reserves with third-party administrators to pay known and incurred claims.
  • Direct the claims management process and ensure compliance with regulatory requirements.
  • Communicate claim status with relevant parties and provide updates to stakeholders.
  • Partner with departments and employees to promote a safe and healthy work environment and support employees in their return to work.
  • Research and evaluate the program operations and activities of third-party administrators to ensure compliance and identify areas for improvement.
  • Use data analysis and risk management information systems to inform safety programs and identify trends.
  • Work with third-party administrators to capture new data points for measurement and implement pre- and post-loss training solutions.
  • Coordinate safety and loss prevention services, including investigations and remediation efforts.
  • Build strong relationships with campus stakeholders to identify and manage areas of risk.
  • Communicate findings to the Executive Director of Risk Management and advise on the appropriate remediation and management of significant risks.
  • Provide management dashboards on claims activity and maintain reports.
  • Participate in University committees as needed and support the Executive Director of Risk Management on projects.
Requirements
  • Bachelor's degree in a related field.
  • 5-7 years of experience in a related job discipline.
  • Knowledge of laws and claim issues related to property, general liability, automobile liability, and workers' compensation.
  • Strong fundamentals in finance and technical ability to understand complex insurance policies.
  • Healthcare or higher education insurance experience.
  • General understanding of contract and corporate law and loss prevention and claims management philosophies.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree.
  • 5 years of industry and claims management experience.
  • Extensive knowledge of laws and claim issues related to property, general liability, automobile liability, and workers' compensation.
  • Strong fundamentals in finance and technical ability to understand complex insurance policies.
  • Healthcare or higher education insurance experience.
  • General understanding of contract and corporate law and loss prevention and claims management philosophies.
Working Conditions
  • Sit at a workstation including desktop computer.
  • Walk across campus and through large building corridors.
  • Traverse through buildings damaged by fire, windstorm, etc. and access non-public building spaces including attics, basements, mechanical rooms, steam tunnels.
  • Flexibility to be on-call 24-7 to respond to campus emergencies.
  • Stand for extended periods of time as needed.
  • Some domestic travel.
