Position Overview:

This role requires sound judgment to autonomously execute general accounting responsibilities. The individual will oversee accounting transactions at the fund level to ensure the precision of data in relation to the institution's overall financial activities. Responsibilities include making journal entries, correcting discrepancies, and aiding in the formulation of financial statements, schedules, and exhibits. This position will also manage various financial service sectors, which may encompass bank reconciliations, auxiliary services, tax obligations, capital assets, bonds, capital projects, and utility processing.

Key Responsibilities:

General Accounting Functions: 70%
  • Utilizes sound judgment to independently carry out general accounting tasks.
  • Conducts bank reconciliations and performs detailed analyses.
  • Investigates account coding and financial discrepancies to determine necessary adjustments, ensuring compliance with generally accepted accounting principles (GAAP), governmental accounting standards, and relevant regulations.
  • Reviews accounting records and online details to confirm accuracy and compliance within the financial system. Identifies issues, interviews users to trace sources of errors, and suggests training improvements to rectify these errors.
  • Ensures existing accounting processes maintain the integrity of fiscal data and recommends enhancements as needed.
  • Reviews daily and monthly diagnostics, resolving issues by adjusting processes or posting journal entries.
  • Provides backup support for other accounting roles as needed.
  • Offers assistance and training to various staff members on accounting policies and procedures.
Financial Reporting and Year-End Activities: 15%
  • Prepares components of financial statements and related schedules to comply with reporting requirements. This includes gathering, analyzing, and reconciling financial data using various reporting tools.
  • Identifies and analyzes discrepancies, prepares documentation, and makes necessary journal entries.
  • Handles miscellaneous tasks as assigned by supervisory personnel.
Reporting, Training & Special Projects: 15%
  • Engages in additional projects that enhance departmental efficiency and compliance, aiming to improve management of financial services.
  • Assists and trains departments in utilizing financial reporting systems.
  • Collaborates with General Accounting and campus entities to design reports that leverage financial data for improved efficiency and management insights.
  • Participates in special projects and system conversions as directed by supervisors.
  • Contributes to the implementation of new software and system upgrades.
Minimum Qualifications:

Education:
Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, or a related discipline.

Experience:
A minimum of 3 years of progressively responsible accounting experience demonstrating the necessary skills for this role. Preferred experience includes work in higher education or fund accounting, familiarity with specific financial software, and/or experience in IT system implementation.

Skills:
Ability to work independently on project-based assignments, understand IT concepts, and collaborate with IT professionals. Strong analytical skills for recommending process improvements and developing financial systems collaboratively with both accounting and IT staff. Excellent technical and communication skills are essential for this position.
