Job Summary

This position is responsible for assisting with the safety, movement, management, and care of students with special needs while on a bus. The EC Bus Monitor will partner with the assigned driver to provide appropriate transportation services for students.

Key Responsibilities
  • Assist the bus driver in managing student behaviors on the bus.
  • Assist students with loading/unloading the school bus.
  • Ensure responsible adults meet students leaving the bus.
  • Operate equipment, including wheelchairs, tie-downs, seat belts, safety vests, safety restraint systems, mechanical lifts, and other adaptive equipment as necessary.
  • Assist driver in ensuring seat belts, safety restraint systems, and wheelchair securement straps are secured as required.
  • Provide written records of any incident that occurs on the bus to the supervisor.
  • Be alert to conditions in the loading and unloading area that present a danger to students.
  • Ensure students are appropriately secured in the bus.
  • Attend all meetings as directed by transportation staff and meetings scheduled by schools pertaining to the position.
  • Maintain current knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Properly assist and clean body fluids as necessary.
  • Assist the bus driver in cleaning and disinfecting the bus interior and with the removal of trash and litter daily.
  • Perform related duties as assigned.
Requirements
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 18 years of age.
  • One year of experience working with children.
  • High school diploma desired.
  • Two years of experience working with children and experience with students with disabilities desired.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities
  • Maintain a high level of ethical behavior and confidentiality of information about students.
  • Knowledge of emergency evacuation procedures.
  • Knowledge of how to properly handle body fluids.
  • Ability to maintain proper records and documentation necessary for the position.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing.
  • Demonstrate regular attendance and punctuality.
  • Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with children, parents, bus drivers, and school staff.
  • Ability to maintain order and behavior of children.
  • Ability to maintain a positive, calm attitude while on the job.
