Thrift Store Sales Associate

Job Objective: Responsible for managing and pricing items available for purchase. Accurately processes transactions, calculates totals, accepts payments, and provides change to customers in a thrift store setting by executing the following tasks.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Efficiently handle merchandise in accordance with the standards established by the Store Manager
  • Price items that are not marked
  • Organize and display clothing as directed
  • Restock racks, shelves, counters, or tables with merchandise
  • Maintain cleanliness of shelves, counters, or tables
  • Process customer purchases
  • Operate the cash register, manage payments, and provide change
  • Package or bag items for customers
  • Assist in setting up displays and arranging merchandise to enhance sales
  • Foster positive customer relations by providing prompt and courteous assistance
  • Ensure proper rotation and management of merchandise
  • Utilize assigned equipment correctly
  • Maintain cleanliness of the building and surrounding areas, ensuring they are free of trash and donated items
  • Keep restrooms, entryways, trash, windows, and floors clean
  • Report any complaints, damages, or concerns to management
  • Support the mission of The Salvation Army
  • Perform additional duties as assigned by the thrift store manager or corps officer

Minimum Qualifications:

Education: High School diploma or equivalent preferred

Experience: Previous retail experience is preferred but not mandatory

Certifications/Licenses: None required

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to effectively communicate information in one-on-one situations with customers, clients, and colleagues; bilingual (English and Spanish) preferred
  • Proficient in using basic office equipment including cash registers, copiers, fax machines, and telephones
  • Ability to perform basic arithmetic operations
  • Capable of handling transactions involving American currency
  • Ability to comprehend and execute instructions provided in written, oral, diagram, or schedule formats
  • Ability to collaborate effectively within a team environment

Supervisory Responsibility: None

Physical Requirements: Includes speaking, hearing, and vision; excellent manual dexterity; ability to lift, pull, and push materials weighing up to 30 pounds; bending, squatting, and walking; standing for up to 8 hours daily. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals to perform the essential functions of this position.

Driving: Not applicable

Working Conditions: Work is conducted in a typical retail store environment.
