Role Summary

The Highway Construction Quality Inspector is responsible for overseeing heavy highway, road, and bridge construction and maintenance projects. This role involves monitoring contractors to ensure adherence to quality standards and compliance with contractual obligations. The inspector will operate under the guidance of a Senior Construction Inspector or Construction Manager.

Key Responsibilities
  • Conduct material testing and inspections or supervise third-party testing.
  • Perform field measurements and document findings accurately.
  • Interpret and analyze plans and contract documents related to structures, bridges, and roadways.
  • Inspect various construction activities to ensure compliance with specifications, including excavations, drainage, soil and aggregate placement, concrete work, and paving operations.
  • Maintain accurate records of pay quantities for estimates.
  • Compile daily summaries of construction activities and progress.
  • Engage in daily communication with contractors, providing guidance and addressing any compliance issues.
  • Utilize standard survey and field engineering equipment to verify lines, grades, dimensions, and elevations.
  • Ensure environmental compliance through the inspection of erosion and sediment control measures.
  • Monitor roadway traffic control and work zone safety measures.
  • Keep comprehensive project records, including daily logs, materials documentation, and monthly estimates.

Work Environment

Physical Requirements

  • Vision requirements include close and distance vision, color discrimination, and depth perception.

Education and Experience

Applicants should possess a minimum of three years of experience in highway construction inspection. Knowledge of construction methods, materials, and relevant specifications is essential.

Certifications

Preferred certifications include:

  • Soil and Aggregate Compaction (VDOT or NICET LEVEL II)
  • Asphalt Field Level I & II (VDOT)
  • American Concrete Institute (ACI)
  • Flagger Certification (VDOT)
  • Certification for Erosion and Sediment Control Inspection (Virginia DEQ)
Additional Qualifications

Proficiency in using computer software for contract management and familiarity with Microsoft Office Suite is required. Candidates should be capable of interpreting construction plans and applying mathematical principles to field adjustments.
