Responsibilities
  • Assist in the preparation, dispensing, and delivery of medications to patients
  • Interact daily with nursing departmental personnel, other hospital staff, physicians, and UPMC employees
  • Travel among UPMC facilities to complete assigned pharmacy activities
  • Participate in performance improvement initiatives related to the pharmacy department
  • Promote the mission, vision, and values of UPMC
  • Maintain a clean, orderly, and safe pharmacy environment
  • Complete necessary documentation, including medication credits, charge forms, and logs
  • Assist in training employees and pharmacy students on work procedures
  • Fills and replaces medications in automated dispensing cabinets
  • Inspect medications in assigned areas and remove expired or recalled medications
  • Fills and delivers interdepartmental orders
  • Proactively answers the telephone, waits on customers, and checks the pneumatic tube station
  • Understand and comply with handling procedures for controlled substances
  • Repackage medications as necessary and complete required documentation
  • Prepare and label non-sterile compounds and other required products
  • Prepare specialty products, such as chemotherapy and epidurals, under the direction of a pharmacist
  • Prepare and label IV admixtures and other sterile products
  • Deliver medications to patient care units and transfer/remove medications as necessary
  • Initial orders and ensure pharmacist review before dispensing
Requirements
  • Certification by the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB)
  • Act 34 clearance
  • High school diploma or equivalent
