Position Overview

The Clinical Laboratory Scientist in the Blood Bank department is responsible for delivering thorough laboratory analysis for patients. This role is crucial in ensuring that laboratory results are precise, prompt, and adhere to quality standards.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conducts analysis of patient samples, control specimens, and proficiency tests, documenting results promptly in accordance with laboratory protocols.
  • Calibrates, maintains, and troubleshoots laboratory instruments, ensuring proper documentation is completed.
  • Engages in ongoing education and submits necessary documentation as required.
  • Adheres to regulatory, accreditation, safety, and institutional policies and procedures.
  • Provides instruction, orientation, and mentorship to students, staff, residents, patients, and other healthcare professionals as needed.
  • Manages inventory levels of laboratory supplies, accurately preparing, labeling, and storing reagents, standards, controls, and specimens for testing.
  • Participates in quality assurance and quality improvement initiatives.
  • Performs phlebotomy and sample collection as necessary.
  • Conducts product preparations in compliance with FDA, cGMP, AABB standards, NRC regulations, and departmental protocols.
  • Reviews and correlates laboratory test results, recognizing abnormal findings and critical values, verifying result accuracy, and initiating corrective actions when necessary.
  • Utilizes and wears Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) as required to ensure safety and minimize risk while performing job duties.
  • Must demonstrate the professional, clinical, and technical competencies required for the assigned department.

Required Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree in Biological, Physical, Chemical, or Clinical Laboratory Science/Medical Technology from an accredited institution.
  • High School diploma or equivalent.

Licensure and Certification Requirements

  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification from the American Society for Clinical Pathology Board of Certification (ASCP) within 180 days.
  • Medical Laboratory Scientist (MLS) certification from the American Medical Technologists (AMT) within 180 days.

Knowledge and Skills

  • Must meet CLIA requirements for high complexity testing.
