Position Overview

The Banking Associate Trainee role is focused on providing exceptional customer experiences to both current and prospective clients. Individuals in this position will demonstrate effective communication skills and possess a solid understanding of the products and services available. Additionally, they will be responsible for identifying referral opportunities that lead to outcomes indicative of outstanding customer service.

An employee will remain in a trainee capacity until they have successfully demonstrated their ability to effectively match customers with the appropriate mix of products and services through needs-based inquiries. They must consistently meet and/or exceed performance and production targets set by the Banking Center Manager.

Key Responsibilities

  • Develop a comprehensive understanding of banking operations.
  • Process cash and checks for deposits, verifying amounts, checking endorsements, and reviewing checks for potential fraud.
  • Carefully examine cash to prevent counterfeit bills.
  • Cash checks for clients in accordance with bank policies, entering transactions into the computer system and issuing receipts.
  • Provide accurate customer service, including balancing the cash drawer throughout the day to minimize discrepancies.
  • Acquire basic knowledge of deposit and lending products and services.
  • Identify appropriate product types through needs-based questioning to build and enhance customer relationships, including determining needs and referring to business partners.
  • Assist with basic deposit account openings and maintenance requests under the guidance of a senior employee.
  • Enhance sales and product knowledge to achieve personal and team objectives as established. Track and monitor sales and opportunities in customer information software.
  • Engage in onsite visits to clients to promote the Employee Perks at Work Program and Merchant Services.
  • Proactively participate in outbound teleconsulting to foster and expand existing client relationships.
  • Actively engage in weekly team meetings and one-on-one coaching sessions.
  • Serve as a relief and/or backup teller at other Midland States Bank locations.
  • Complete all assigned learning activities in a timely manner.
  • Exemplify and promote Midland States Bank's core values that support the bank's culture.
  • Participate in bank-sponsored community activities and initiatives.
  • Occasional travel may be required for training and team meetings, with a willingness to travel periodically to various locations as needed.
  • May require working in a Midland office to ensure collaboration and support for internal and external customers.
  • Maintain compliance with all applicable regulations, including but not limited to the Bank Secrecy Act (BSA).
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Position Requirements

Education/Experience:

  • Background in sales and customer service.

Skills and Abilities:

  • Ability to stand for extended periods.
  • Capability to lift and transport coin and currency bags as necessary (bags may weigh between 25lbs and 50lbs).
