Position Overview:

The Merchandise Procurement Specialist is responsible for meeting sales, margin, and inventory turnover objectives for their assigned categories. This role will lead the strategic merchandise planning and assortment development to enhance overall business performance. The Specialist will oversee both domestic and international product sourcing and may initiate proprietary product innovations. Merchandise is acquired to optimize outcomes while aligning with the broader departmental and corporate strategies. This position reports to the Senior Buyer or Divisional Merchandise Manager and may supervise Associate Buyers and/or Assistant Buyers.

Key Responsibilities:

Management of Assigned Categories (80%):

  • Achieve sales, gross margin, and inventory targets for designated categories.
  • Develop merchandise assortments and strategies that align with corporate and departmental objectives while prioritizing customer satisfaction.
  • Oversee all aspects of product selection, including mix, brand, pricing, promotions, negotiations, and inventory management.
  • Conduct competitive analyses to identify new brands and opportunities for expanding product offerings.
  • Deliver precise sales forecasts by analyzing financial data and market trends.
  • Prepare and present product analyses during assortment and business review meetings.
  • Foster strong relationships with vendors to ensure product availability and timely delivery.
  • Monitor vendor performance to enhance profitability and meet financial goals.
  • Plan and execute promotional events, ensuring accuracy in pricing and marketing materials.
  • Mentor Associate Buyers and Assistant Buyers to prepare them for advancement.
  • Ensure compliance with company processes and standards within the team.
  • Visit retail locations to assess merchandise performance and adapt strategies accordingly.
  • Attend trade shows and vendor meetings to stay informed on market trends and establish vendor relationships.

Division and Cross-Functional Projects (20%):

  • Collaborate with the Merchandising Purchasing team, Marketing, and Vendors on proprietary product development.
  • Provide guidance to the Merchandise Planning team on product flow and key item strategies.
  • Work with the Merchandising Operations team to implement merchandising strategies in stores.
  • Support Omnichannel initiatives to maximize online sales in assigned categories.
  • Participate in additional projects as directed by senior management.

Education and Experience:

A Bachelor's degree from an accredited institution or equivalent experience. A minimum of 3-6 years in a related buying role with a proven track record of increasing buying volume and financial accountability.

Qualifications:

  • Strong financial acumen and strategic planning capabilities.
  • Proven ability to identify and initiate new business opportunities.
  • Results-driven with a focus on productivity and effectiveness.
  • Leadership and coaching skills to develop team members.
  • Proficient in retail mathematics and financial analysis.
  • Ability to recognize and anticipate market trends.

  • Strong knowledge of merchandising processes and systems.
  • Proficient in desktop applications and Windows-based software.

Travel Requirements:

Up to 50% travel may be necessary based on assigned categories.
