Position Overview: The Newly Licensed Registered Nurse (NLRN) is responsible for delivering exceptional nursing care to assigned patients, focusing on both scientific and compassionate approaches. This role employs a holistic systems perspective to ensure client wellness and safety across various domains, including physiological, psychological, social, cultural, developmental, and spiritual aspects.
Qualifications: Candidates must have graduated from a Diploma, Associate Degree, or Bachelor of Science in Nursing (BSN) program and successfully passed the state board examination as mandated by the New York State Board of Nursing prior to commencing employment. Those who have completed a Diploma or Associate Degree program or hold a non-Nursing Bachelor's Degree are required to complete a BSN program within five years of hire. Additionally, the NLRN must pass a medication and IV challenge examination as outlined during the orientation period and maintain current CPR certification.
Experience: The NLRN will begin their career at Guthrie Hospital through the Newly Licensed Registered Nurse Residency Program. Specialized clinical tracks may be available at specific hospitals. Registered nurses with less than one year of experience must be recruited through this program and cannot be hired directly into open positions on any specific unit.
Key Responsibilities:
- Assessment: The NLRN gathers relevant data concerning the healthcare consumer's health status or situation.
Involvement of the patient, family, and other healthcare professionals is essential for comprehensive data collection. Prioritization of data collection is determined by the patient's immediate condition or anticipated needs. Daily reviews of patient records, including physician notes and laboratory results, are required, along with documentation in a retrievable format.
- Diagnosis: The NLRN interprets assessment data to identify actual or potential health issues.
Identification of risks to health and safety, as well as barriers to health, is crucial. The NLRN collaborates with patients, families, and healthcare providers to verify diagnoses and prioritize them based on mutually established goals.
- Outcomes Identification: The NLRN determines expected outcomes tailored to the healthcare consumer's needs.
Outcomes should involve the patient and family, reflecting a timeline for achievement and ensuring continuity of care. Documentation must be individualized and culturally appropriate.
- Planning: The NLRN formulates a care plan outlining strategies to achieve measurable outcomes.
The care plan should be holistic, evidence-based, and consider economic implications while adhering to current regulations and standards.
- Implementation: The NLRN executes the established care plan.
Collaboration with patients and families is essential for safe and effective care delivery. The NLRN must document all implementations and modifications to the care plan.
- Coordination of Care: The NLRN organizes and manages care delivery.
Effective communication with patients and the interprofessional team is vital to ensure safe transitions in care.
- Health Education and Promotion: The NLRN identifies and addresses health teaching needs.
Utilizing various methods, the NLRN promotes health and evaluates the effectiveness of health education provided to patients.
- Evaluation: The NLRN assesses progress towards achieving goals and outcomes.
Ongoing evaluations must be holistic and systematic, involving collaboration with the patient and interprofessional team to ensure the effectiveness and safety of the care plan.
Professional Standards: The NLRN must perform nursing care in accordance with established standards of practice and the organization's policies.
Additional Responsibilities:
- Assume leadership roles when appropriate.
- Participate in the planning and presentation of educational programs.

Compensation: The pay range for this position is $51.53 per hour.
