MITRE is seeking a highly skilled Senior Nuclear Engineer/Scientist to join our team in a dynamic analytical environment focused on solving our customers' energy technology and resilience challenges.

Key Responsibilities

  • Conduct in-depth analysis of advanced nuclear, small modular, and micronuclear reactors, including deployment challenges, through analytical, model-based, and experimental assessment.
  • Evaluate future nuclear technologies, including water, gas, liquid metal, and molten salt reactors, and assess their potential to address unique customer environments and needs.
  • Characterize the maturity, limitations, and capabilities of nuclear technologies, and provide recommendations for their application.
  • Design and evaluate a wide range of power and energy technologies, and determine courses of action to meet customer requirements as part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary team.
  • Framing and communicating energy system performance and cost in customer applications.
  • Collaborate with diverse experts from across MITRE, our customers, and partners, providing subject matter expertise in nuclear and associated advanced energy technologies.

Requirements

  • Typically requires a minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 7 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 4 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience in one of the following fields: Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Deep technical expertise in one or more nuclear technology areas, including performance testing and prediction, safety analysis and management, packaging and ruggedization, manufacturing processes and quality control, system/application integration, and nuclear design.
  • Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills.
  • The ability to conduct research and development of new energy and power systems to meet customer requirements in a collaborative environment with both internal and external researchers.
  • The ability to think critically and be proactive in pursuing research and problem-solving with minimal supervision.
  • Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must be able to obtain a Department of Defense SECRET clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.

Preferred Qualifications

  • MS or PhD in one of the following areas: Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, and/or Physics.
  • Extensive experience and expertise, including recent publications, in the design and evaluation of nuclear reactors.
  • Basic understanding of a broad range of energy storage, energy conversion, energy harvesting technologies, power distribution, and power management systems that enhance energy resilience.
