Senior Nuclear Engineer/Scientist

MITRE Lab's Emerging Engineering and Physical Sciences Department is seeking a senior engineer with expertise in nuclear technologies to work in a dynamic analytical environment focused on solving energy technology and resilience challenges.

This department serves as a vanguard for MITRE to meet the future needs of customers, requiring technical excellence while encouraging creativity and fostering interests in current and emerging technologies across its diverse membership.

The advanced energy program aims to strengthen energy resilience and readiness to improve national energy security by addressing key challenges and opportunities in critical energy infrastructure, battery storage, microgrids, and operational energy exercises.


Key Responsibilities:
  • Analysis of advanced nuclear, small modular, and micronuclear reactors and/or deployment challenges through analytical, model-based, and experimental assessment.
  • Evaluation of future nuclear technologies and associated trends to meet customer environments and needs.
  • Characterization of the maturity, limitations, and capabilities of nuclear technologies.
  • Design and evaluation of power and energy technologies to meet customer requirements as part of a collaborative multi-disciplinary team.

Transdisciplinary collaboration with diverse experts from across MITRE, customers, and partners, providing subject matter expertise in nuclear and associated advanced energy technologies.


Requirements:
  • Minimum of 10 years of related experience with a Bachelor's degree; or 7 years and a Master's degree; or a PhD with 4 years' experience; or equivalent combination of related education and work experience in Nuclear Engineering, Physics, Chemistry, Electrical Engineering, or Mechanical Engineering.
  • Deep technical expertise in nuclear technology areas.
  • Strong technical writing and oral presentation skills.
  • Ability to conduct research and development of new energy and power systems in a collaborative environment.
  • Ability to think critically and be proactive in pursuing research and problem-solving with minimal supervision.

Applicants selected for this position will be subject to a U.S. government security investigation and must be able to obtain a Department of Defense SECRET clearance, which requires U.S. citizenship.


Preferred Qualifications:
  • MS or PhD in Nuclear Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Mechanical Engineering, Chemistry, or Physics.
  • Extensive experience and expertise in the design and evaluation of nuclear reactors.
  • Basic understanding of energy storage, conversion, and distribution technologies that enhance energy resilience.
