Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM)

Location – Duke University Health System

Role Summary

The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) serves as an advanced practice provider (APP) dedicated to delivering comprehensive patient care across various stages of maternity and gynecological health. This role encompasses both primary and specialized services provided in diverse settings, including inpatient units and outpatient clinics. The APP is responsible for conducting physical assessments, gathering and documenting patient data, performing diagnostic and therapeutic procedures, ordering laboratory tests, prescribing medications, and coordinating patient care and discharge processes. The APP plays a vital role in enhancing patient care quality, engaging in research, and contributing to educational initiatives within the organization.

Work Schedule

APPs typically engage in an average of 40 hours per week, with the potential for both inpatient and outpatient responsibilities. Outpatient duties are generally scheduled Monday through Friday, with options for 4 or 8-hour shifts. Inpatient responsibilities may require 8 or 12-hour shifts, rotating throughout the week as necessary to meet clinical demands.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Expertise

  • Collaborate with healthcare professionals to assess, diagnose, plan, prioritize, and evaluate patient care effectiveness and efficiency.
  • Coordinate clinical practices for patients receiving care through established protocols.
  • Conduct daily rounds to evaluate patient status and implement necessary interventions.
  • Engage in evidence-based clinical practice by reviewing relevant literature.
  • Monitor patient conditions and initiate emergency measures as required.
  • Communicate all significant patient information to the healthcare team effectively.
  • Document all relevant patient data accurately in medical records.
  • Lead and coordinate care for the OB-GYN service.
  • Utilize prescriptive authority in accordance with regulatory guidelines.
  • Demonstrate advanced nursing skills and evidence-based practices.

Education and Training

  • Identify educational needs of nursing staff and provide tailored training sessions.
  • Develop and assess educational programs for healthcare providers.
  • Mentor healthcare learners through formal agreements.
  • Address educational needs of patients and families with culturally sensitive approaches.

Research and Quality Improvement

  • Incorporate current research findings into clinical practice.
  • Support clinical research initiatives through various activities.
  • Participate in quality improvement projects and document outcomes.

Consultative Role

  • Offer expertise and resources related to maternal and fetal health to healthcare providers and the community.
  • Develop and evaluate standards of care and practice guidelines.

Professional Development

Qualifications

Education

Completion of an accredited MSN or DNP Nurse Midwifery Program.

Certification

National certification as a CNM.

Licensure

Current unrestricted RN license with authorization to practice as a Certified Nurse Midwife.

Experience

Preferred minimum of 1 year of experience as a CNM.

Life Support Certifications

BLS and NRP certifications are required.

Physical and Mental Requirements

  • Ability to articulate and adhere to the scope of practice as a Nurse Practitioner in the state.
