Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled and compassionate Shelter Veterinarian to join our team at the Cleveland Animal Protective League (APL). As a key member of our veterinary team, you will be responsible for providing high-quality medical care to animals in our shelter, as well as supervising and training veterinary technicians and assistants.

Key Responsibilities
  • Perform spay/neuter surgeries and other medical procedures as needed
  • Provide daily clinical supervision of veterinary technicians, students, and assistants
  • Stay up-to-date on current best surgical practices and make recommendations for improvement
  • Provide medical care and recommendations for treatment of shelter animals
  • Educate volunteers, students, and staff on proper animal care and surgery follow-up
  • Report to Medical Director and provide clinical supervision in their absence
  • Supervise daily cleaning and animal handling for adherence to protocol in the clinic
  • Audit drug log for usage and accuracy
  • Continues research and maintenance of safe and efficacious medical protocol regarding anesthesia and surgery
  • Completes post-op recheck exams and orders medical treatments as necessary
Requirements
  • Doctor of Veterinary Medicine from an accredited college or university
  • Ohio Veterinary License in good standing
  • Fear Free Certified or must become certified within six months of hire
  • Able to perform 35 sterilization surgeries per 6-hour shift
  • Excellent communication skills
  • Knowledge and experience in high volume spay/neuter and shelter medicine
Working Conditions

The Shelter Veterinarian will work in a fast-paced animal shelter environment, with exposure to animals with questionable health and temperament concerns, high noise levels, zoonotic diseases, and cleaning agents. The position requires frequent movement around the shelter, as well as the ability to handle animals of all sizes and positions.
