Job Summary

This role is responsible for maintaining the outdoor spaces of Indiana University Bloomington, ensuring they are safe, clean, and aesthetically pleasing. The successful candidate will have a strong background in landscaping and maintenance, with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.

Key Responsibilities

  • Maintain turf areas, including mowing, trimming, and edging, using a variety of equipment such as riding mowers, push mowers, and edgers.
  • Perform mulching, weeding, and thatching, as well as aerating and trimming around flower beds, walks, pathways, and walls.
  • Prepare planting beds with hand and power tools, integrate soil amendments, and plant bulbs, flowers, ground covers, trees, and shrubs.
  • Prune trees, shrubs, vines, and hedges, and rake leaves.
  • Perform snow and ice removal using hand tools and power equipment.
  • Assist with other duties and responsibilities as assigned, including general building maintenance tasks.
  • Operate University vehicles as needed.
  • Work flexible shifts, including evenings and weekends, and provide 24-hour emergency response as needed.

Qualifications

Education

  • High school diploma or equivalent (such as HSED or GED)

Work Experience

  • 1 year of landscaping or grounds-related work experience

Licenses and Certificates

  • Valid driver's license and ability to be insured by Indiana University upon date of hire

  • Ability to apply seed, fertilizer, and chemicals
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions

Working Conditions/Demands

This role requires the ability to remain in a stationary position as well as the ability to move about the workplace for long durations. It requires effective communication and the ability to operate machinery, tools, and controls. The role requires the ability to ascend/descend ladders/stairs, and to position oneself in low-level positions, detect a variety of chemicals and/or gases. The role requires the ability to ascend to rooftops and move in tight spaces to perform and complete inspections.

This role requires the ability to work during inclement weather (i.e. snow and ice) when weather emergencies dictate that the department is needed to take care of the campus.
