This role provides a safe and supportive environment for psychiatric patients, assisting with basic patient care needs and contributing to a therapeutic milieu.
Key Responsibilities- Assist in maintaining a safe and hazard-free environment by observing and documenting patient behavior, reporting unsafe conditions, and providing emotional and physical support.
- Perform or assist with patient admissions, gathering routine information for nursing assessment, searching patients and belongings for contraband, and documenting belongings and other relevant information.
- Orient patients and their families to the facility and its policies and procedures.
- Escort patients to off-unit appointments and activities, using therapeutic interventions to ensure safety.
- Assist in providing a therapeutic environment by encouraging patients to participate in recreational activities and group therapies.
- Support patients through leading activity and conversation groups.
- Assist in developing patient behavioral expectations.
- May serve as a preceptor to new Psychiatric Technicians.
- Contribute to the unit's training and quality assurance programs, as well as ordering, stocking, and maintaining clerical and patient supplies.
- Function as a member of the interdisciplinary treatment team, coordinating with leadership to maintain department forms.
- Assist in initiating and contributing to patient treatment planning, teaching, and discharge planning.
- Participate in patient care team conferences, sharing observations of patient progress and assisting the primary Registered Nurse with patient care plans.
- Ability to recognize adverse reactions to medication and report them in a timely manner.
- Ability to assess patients who may pose a risk to themselves or others and report this information to the Registered Nurse.
- Interpersonal skills to acquire patient trust and respond appropriately in crisis situations.
- Ability to utilize group dynamics principles when co-leading groups to facilitate social, behavioral, and communication skills development.
- Knowledge and skills necessary to provide care appropriate to the age of the patients served.
- Knowledge of life span growth and development principles and the ability to assess patient status and provide care as described in department policies and procedures.
- Demonstrated human relations and effective communication skills.
- Six months of behavioral health or direct patient care experience, which may include CNA, MA, HCA, Teacher's aide, or assistant roles.
- Current RQI Healthcare Provider eCredential through the University of Utah Health RQI system, obtained within 30 days of hire.
This position involves intensive work that may exert up to 50 pounds and requires lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, or otherwise moving objects, such as medical equipment or patients, while providing care in a psychiatric setting. Workers in this role may be exposed to infectious diseases.
