Corrections Officers are expected to become skilled in the use of firearms, chemical agents, and other crowd control tools, as well as emergency communication systems, self-defense techniques, and the unarmed physical management of individuals in custody. They must demonstrate sound judgment, act responsibly, and possess excellent verbal and written communication skills.

Upon mastering the fundamental responsibilities of a Corrections Officer, various specialized assignments become available within the agency, including roles in Classification, Close Street Supervision, Court Services, Transport Unit, Work Crew, Intelligence, and Life Safety. Additionally, you may opt to join specialized teams such as the Crisis Negotiation Team, the Corrections Emergency Response Team (CERT), Honor Guard, or the Corrections Critical Incident Response Team.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Process, interview, classify, and book individuals in custody; conduct searches and manage the release of custody.
  • Monitor and control the movement and activities of individuals in custody in various settings; assess suicidal individuals and provide necessary counseling and medical coordination.
  • Escort individuals in custody to various locations for court appearances, medical care, and other necessary events; supervise meal times and recreational activities.
  • Manage violent or mentally unstable individuals in custody; maintain daily records and document behavior.
  • Respond to emergencies, including medical situations and assaults; provide testimony in court regarding incidents that occur in custody.
  • Ensure security within the facility and oversee the health and safety of staff and individuals in custody; operate control rooms and monitor security systems.
  • Assist individuals in custody with inquiries regarding personal records and court proceedings; collaborate with various departments and agencies.
  • Perform additional duties as assigned.
Incentives for Qualified Candidates:
  • Qualified lateral candidates may not need to complete the Basic Academy.
  • Incentive pay is available for candidates holding Intermediate or Advanced DPSST Certification.
  • Prior corrections experience may count towards vacation accrual.
Relocation Reimbursement:
  • Eligible candidates may receive reimbursement for moving expenses up to $2,500.
Education Premium:
  • Eligible candidates may receive an education premium based on college coursework or degrees.
Work Schedule:
As a Corrections Officer, you will be required to work various shifts, including weekends and holidays. Overtime may be necessary, and newly hired employees should expect to rotate through all shifts within the first year of employment.

Qualifications:
We will consider any combination of relevant work experience, volunteering, education, and transferable skills as qualifying unless specified otherwise. Please provide clear details on how your background aligns with the requirements.

Minimum Qualifications:
  • At least three years of experience as a certified corrections officer.
  • Must be currently employed or have been employed within the past 12 months as a certified corrections officer.
  • A high school diploma or equivalent.
  • Must be at least 21 years of age.
  • Must be a United States citizen or eligible for citizenship.
  • Must possess a valid driver's license.
  • Must pass a thorough background investigation.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in public safety or security settings.
  • Current certification as a State of Oregon DPSST Corrections Officer.
  • Experience in a command structure organization.
  • College-level coursework from an accredited institution.
