Key Responsibilities

The Lead Law Enforcement Officer will carry out a comprehensive range of law enforcement duties by adhering to and implementing regulations, policies, and procedures related to law enforcement, personal and physical security operations, patrol responsibilities, control desk operations, coordination with local judicial systems, and crime prevention initiatives for the designated jurisdiction.
  • Safeguards the civil liberties of all individuals on VA-controlled premises;
  • Prevents, detects, and investigates criminal activities;
  • Conducts patrols in assigned areas, either on foot or in a vehicle;
  • Subdues individuals causing disturbances or posing threats to themselves or others;
  • Adheres to protocols regarding search and seizure of evidence and illegal items;
  • Manages significant and emergency situations;
  • Secures search and arrest warrants;
  • Apprehends law violators;
  • Provides basic first aid and CPR until emergency medical personnel arrive;
  • Documents activities and incidents occurring during shifts;
  • Implements traffic control measures;
  • Assists individuals in crisis situations;
  • Performs additional related tasks as assigned.
Work Schedule: Varies from Sunday to Saturday between the hours of 0700 - 1900 and 1900 - 0700.

Critical Skills Incentive (CSI): Approved

Physical Demands: The role necessitates, on a regular basis, considerable and strenuous physical exertion, including running, frequent climbing of multiple flights of stairs, and lifting items exceeding 50 pounds. It requires stamina, physical agility, dexterity, and the strength to pursue, apprehend, or detain individuals who may be uncooperative, aggressive, or armed.

Qualifications

To qualify for this position, applicants must meet all requirements within the specified timeframe.

Applicants must possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-06 level in the normal line of progression for this occupation. Examples of specialized experience include, but are not limited to: conducting investigations, apprehending and detaining individuals suspected or convicted of criminal offenses; maintaining order to protect life and property; taking initial complaints; interviewing witnesses; securing crime scenes and conducting limited searches; responding to emergencies; gathering information and preparing reports; conducting routine patrols, traffic control, and traffic accident investigations. Note: Relevant specialized experience may have been acquired in police work, military police service, visitor protection, law enforcement in parks or recreational areas, or criminal investigative duties. Experience as a security guard or corrections officer is generally not qualifying.

ADDITIONAL CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:

  1. New officers are required to attend an 8-week training course at the VA Law Enforcement Training Center.
  2. Designated Drug-Testing Position: Applicants selected for VA employment in a testing designated position are subject to urinalysis to screen for illegal drug use prior to appointment.
  3. A medical examination is required, including good near and distant vision, ability to distinguish basic colors, and ability to hear conversational voices.
  4. Applicants must possess the capacity to perform essential functions without risk to themselves or others.
  5. A character investigation will be conducted on selected applicants to assess honesty, integrity, and loyalty to the U.S. Government.
  6. Must qualify to be issued a firearm and maintain annual qualifications.
Experience refers to both paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work.

Education

No educational substitution is available for the GS-07 level.
