Job Title: Assistant General Counsel

This is a challenging and rewarding opportunity to join the Office of the General Counsel as an Assistant General Counsel. As a key member of our team, you will provide expert legal advice to senior managers and policy officials, and play a critical role in shaping the Department's legal strategy.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Provide legal advice to senior managers and policy officials on a wide range of issues, including program administration and enforcement.
  • Supervise a team of attorneys responsible for drafting, reviewing, and approving regulations, legislation, and other documents.
  • Review and supervise the preparation of legal opinions, pleadings, and other documents in connection with litigation involving the Department.
  • Develop and implement litigation strategies in administrative cases before Administrative Law Judges and the Judicial Officer.
  • Work with the Department of Justice on affirmative and defensive litigation in Federal courts.
  • Meet with representatives of stakeholder groups and other Federal agencies to advance the Department's interests.
  • Develop work processes and procedures, oversee the training and development of the legal and support staff, and recruit and hire new attorneys and support staff.
Requirements:
  • A professional law degree (LL.B. or J.D.) from an accredited law school.
  • Active membership of the bar in good standing in any state, territory of the United States, the District of Columbia, or the Commonwealth of Puerto Rico.
  • At least 5 years of experience in a senior legal role, with a strong track record of providing expert legal advice and leading teams of attorneys.
  • Excellent communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to work effectively with senior managers, policy officials, and other stakeholders.
