The New York State Education Department's Office of Education Policy is seeking a Child Care Aide 1 Substitute to work at the New York State School for the Deaf. The successful candidate will be responsible for maintaining the safety and well-being of students, utilizing a total communication approach to language development, and attending to students' personal hygiene needs.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Maintain the safety and well-being of students by escorting them to and from meals, monitoring assigned exits during evacuation emergencies, and supervising students in all areas where they are gathered.
  • Utilize a total communication approach to language development in the presence of deaf or hard of hearing individuals by using both sign language and voice at all times.
  • Check to ensure that each student has their hearing aid, cochlear implant, and/or glasses daily.
  • Attend to students' personal hygiene needs and the development of appropriate daily living skills.
  • Assist students during mealtimes by providing supervision, encouraging balanced meals, and creating a relaxed atmosphere.
  • Prevent child abuse and maltreatment by attending staff training, reporting concerns, and using approved techniques to manage students.
Requirements:
  • Candidates must be able to read, write, and speak English, follow written and spoken instructions, and be in good health and good physical condition.
  • Preference may be given to candidates with experience working with deaf students and the ability to communicate through ASL/Sign Language.
Working Conditions:

This is a temporary, on-call, hourly position. Fingerprinting and a background check are required for employment. Substitutes are notified by phone when services are needed, and every effort is made to give 24-hour prior notice.
