Job Summary

We are seeking a highly skilled Actuation Systems Engineer to join our team at General Atomics Aeronautical Systems, Inc. (GA-ASI). As an Actuation Systems Engineer, you will be responsible for designing and developing actuators for aircraft flight control and utility applications.

The successful candidate will have a strong background in mechanical engineering, with experience in designing and developing electro-mechanical actuators. You will work closely with interdisciplinary functional teams to ensure system-level success and participate in actuation system lifecycle development activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Determine annual and multi-year technical objectives for designated engineering systems or projects/programs.
  • Represent the assigned systems or projects/programs as a prime technical expert.
  • Act as an expert consultant and advisor in identified areas of engineering.
  • Advises or directs the activities of assigned projects/programs to achieve technical objectives.
  • Directs and allocates technical resources and professional staff to achieve objectives.
  • Develops new and/or expands existing business opportunities.
  • Ensures compliance, reporting, and safety standards are maintained.
  • Participates in the planning, selection, retention, and development of the professional staff.
  • Publishes and presents technical papers and abstracts and participates in internal and external technical program reviews.
  • Maintains the strict confidentiality of sensitive information.

Requirements:

  • Typically requires a bachelor's degree, master's degree, or PhD in engineering or a related technical discipline from an accredited institution and progressive engineering experience as follows: twelve or more years of experience with a bachelor's degree, ten or more years of experience with a master's degree, or seven or more years with a PhD.
  • Demonstrates a detailed and extensive technical expertise and application of engineering principles, concepts, theory, and practice with the ability to organize, plan, schedule, conduct, and coordinate workloads to meet established deadlines or milestones with some experience in project leadership.
  • Must possess the ability to understand new concepts quickly and apply them accurately throughout an evolving environment; strong communication, presentation, and interpersonal skills to effectively interface with other departments, customers, government representatives, and/or professionals; the capability of representing the organization as a prime technical contact; and, the ability to provide leadership and guidance to less experienced professionals.
  • Must be customer-focused and able to work on a self-initiated basis or in a team environment and able to travel as required.
  • A Professional Engineering License, original work(s) published in professional engineering journals, invited to present one or more original works to an engineering symposium, and invited and/or participated on an engineering review panel are desirable.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience with bearing selection and sizing, motor selection and sizing, and gear design and analysis.
  • 3D CAD modeling, drawing generation, and checking experience.
  • Finite Element Analysis experience.
  • Working knowledge of ASME Y14.5 Geometric Dimensioning and Tolerancing (GD&T) and Hydraulic, electro-hydraulic, and electro-hydrostatic actuation experience.
  • Electromagnetic devices knowledge.
  • Mechanism design experience.
  • Supervisory experience.

Salary: $116,480 - $208,505
