Pharmacy Technician Coordinator, Controlled Substance

About the Role

The Pharmacy Technician Coordinator, Controlled Substance is a critical member of our pharmacy team, responsible for ensuring the safe and efficient management of controlled substances. This role requires strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and the ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Coordinate the daily activities of pharmacy technicians, including scheduling, training, and evaluations.
  • Assist with the management of controlled substances, including ordering, inventory, and auditing.
  • Perform IV calculations and prepare IV admixtures using proper aseptic technique.
  • Deliver medications and handle intravenous chemotherapy.
  • Extemporaneously compound medications and repackage bulk medications into unit doses.
  • Enter charges and credits, and restock returns.
  • Audit and sign out controlled substances in accordance with state and federal guidelines.
  • Identify and correct discrepancies, and report unusual usage patterns and trends.
  • Complete medication area inspections and remove and document expired medications.
  • Assist with ordering, managing, and monitoring drug inventory in a fiscally responsible manner.

Requirements

  • High school diploma or equivalent required.
  • Three years of hospital pharmacy or equivalent technician experience.
  • Registration with the Texas State Board of Pharmacy (TSBP) as a Registered Technician or Pharmacist Intern is required.
  • National certification with the Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) is preferred.
  • Sterile compounding (IV) certification accredited by the Accreditation Council for Pharmacy Education (ACPE) is required in Sterile & Hazardous Compounding and Investigational Drug Services only.
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification, course accredited by the American Heart Association (AHA) or American Red Cross (ARC) is required by start date.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed primarily in an office area.
  • Moderate physical effort: prolonged standing/walking, occasional lifting/carrying (up to 25 lbs), reaching, bending, crouching, etc.

This position is security-sensitive and subject to Texas Education Code §51.215, which authorizes UT Southwestern to obtain criminal history record information.
