Electrical Specialist

This position is at Lock Operations. The Electrician (OST) is a journey level position involving the electrical repair, installation, modification, maintenance, and testing of Lock machinery, equipment, and related items associated with lock structures and facilities.
Key Responsibilities- Makes electrical repairs by removing, replacing, tightening, splicing, soldering, and insulating defective wiring, motors, outlets, grounds, transformers, heating and ventilation systems, controls, other equipment, and fixtures such as broken and bare wiring, burned out switches and relays, loose connections and fittings, damaged light fixtures, thermostats, and similar items.
- Works with high voltages including 120 volts, 208 volts, and 480 volts. Electrician must wear proper personal protective equipment including a full 40 calorie suit.
- Performs inspections and preventive maintenance of lock equipment. Monitors and troubleshoots lock equipment and other facilities for performance issues, determines corrective action, performs corrective maintenance and/or determines need for assistance from other employees.
- As required, performs related tasks which include but are not limited to: handling lines and mooring cables from vessels approaching the guide walls prior to lockage; operating a pick-up truck, side by side four-wheel drive vehicle with plow attachment and electric lock vehicle (ELV); assisting ship's personnel in securing vessels to the outer guidewalls; assisting pilots on/off vessels; guide wall and facility inspections; preparing witness statements concerning incidents occurring during the incumbents tour of duty; reading and recording vessel drafts and registration numbers; and assisting in the training of new employees.

Work assignments are both inside and outside. When inside, employee is frequently exposed to drafts, changing temperatures, and noise that is difficult to talk above. When outside, may work in bad weather, in mud or snow, in wet or icy areas, and on slippery decks.
Both inside and outside, employee is frequently exposed to irritation or discomfort from dust, heat, fumes, and from hard, damp floors or ground. Typically works on parts and systems that are dirty, oily, or greasy.
May work from ladders, staging, man baskets, decks, or rafts, on or over water. Some work is performed in narrow areas, with low ceilings, and often with limited lighting.
Employee must be able to work at or adjacent to such heights and in cramped areas. May be exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts, burns, including electrical burns, and/or shocks, bruises, and sprains while repairing, positioning, and moving equipment.
May be exposed to the possibility of receiving burns and skin irritations from acid, fluids, and lubricants. May be exposed to hazardous materials, such as, but not limited to, asbestos, lead, or silica; or chemicals such as paint, paint thinner, mineral spirits, and other agents such as naphtha, toluene, liquid anode, etc. which may be listed on the hazardous chemicals list.
