Job Title: Tractor Trailer Driver

At GFL Environmental, we are seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tractor Trailer Driver to join our team. As a Tractor Trailer Driver, you will be responsible for operating a tractor trailer truck on assigned routes to collect and transport solid waste and recyclables in a safe and efficient manner.

Key Responsibilities:
  • Operate tractor trailer truck and on-board hydraulic systems on assigned routes to collect and transport solid waste and recyclables.
  • Ensure all loads are secure by checking that tarps are closed properly and that no loose trash is visible.
  • Empty trailers when dumping loads and provide CSR with trailer numbers and net weights.
  • Complete pre-trip and post-trip safety inspections and reports, daily truck reports, and other documentation as requested by supervisors.
  • Communicate vehicle mechanical problems to mechanics and supervisors immediately.
  • Maintain route quality standards as predetermined by management.
  • Operate trucks and equipment using prescribed techniques to eliminate driver-induced mechanical failures.
  • Follow all safety standards, equipment checks, and precautions in the performance of all duties.
  • Maintain clean vehicles by cleaning cab interiors and exteriors.
  • Comply with all federal, state, and local laws, regulations, and company policies and procedures.
  • Wear required personal protective equipment at all times.
  • Report all accidents or incidents to supervisors immediately.
  • Exhibit a professional demeanor, manner, and appearance at all times.
  • Maintain accurate records of services performed.
  • Work closely with supervisors to improve routing efficiencies.
  • Attend safety and branch meetings.
  • Perform other duties and responsibilities as required or requested by management.
Requirements:
  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) desired.
  • Valid Commercial Driver's License (CDL) required.
  • Minimum one (1) year of commercial driving experience or CDL school certificate required.
  • Ability to meet relevant criteria for safety-sensitive functions according to Company standards.
  • Ability to demonstrate safe driving and equipment operation skills.
Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:
  • Knowledge of truck components and basic maintenance requirements for safe operation.
  • Ability to control equipment operations and maneuver trucks in tight spaces.
  • Ability to recognize unacceptable waste and communicate effectively with internal and external customers.
  • Ability to read, write, and comprehend associated documents and maps.
  • Ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions.
  • Flexibility to adapt to change and commitment to continuous improvement.
  • Ability to exert muscle force to lift, push, pull, or carry objects up to 50 pounds repetitively.
  • Ability to follow all company safety policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of air brakes on tractor trailers.
  • Ability to drive vehicles carrying up to 80,000 pounds or 40 tons.
Physical and Mental Demands:
  • Ability to stand, walk, use hands and fingers, reach, stoop, kneel, crouch, crawl, talk, hear, climb, balance, taste, and smell.
  • Visual requirements include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.
  • Ability to regularly lift/move up to 10 pounds, frequently lift/move up to 25 pounds, and occasionally lift/move up to 50 pounds manually.
  • Sitting is required 75% of the time due to primary function of driving.
  • Ability to work in usually loud conditions.
Working Conditions:
  • Frequently exposed to loud noise, humidity, rainy/stormy weather, extreme hot and cold temperatures, moving mechanical parts, vibration, toxic and caustic chemicals, fumes, and airborne particles.
  • Work in outdoor environment up to 100% of the time.
  • Work route away from branch location on a continuous basis throughout the day.
  • Occasionally work in high precarious places.
  • Work in motor vehicle traffic conditions constantly.
  • Work environment is usually loud.
