Medical Unit Assistant

As a Medical Unit Assistant, you will work under the direct supervision of a licensed Nurse or other professional medical staff in a healthcare setting.
Key responsibilities include:
- Explain to patients the reason for obtaining specimens for laboratory testing.
- Administer emergency first aid, including basic life support procedures.
- Perform simple first aid, such as applying bandaging.
- Prepare patients for examination and assist medical providers during examination by providing necessary supplies/equipment.
- Prepare examination rooms, including cleaning and disinfecting equipment.
- Inform patients on proper preparation for various medical testing.
- Interview patients to obtain routine personal and medical information and appropriate health history.
- Protect patient charts, forms, and documents by adhering to HIPAA.
- Report observations of patients to clinical staff caring for the patient to ensure professional assessment.
- Answer routine inquiries of patients in person or via telephone.
- Provide information to patients and their families regarding healthcare services and healthy living.
- Keep rooms, units, utility, treatment, and storage rooms in a neat and orderly fashion.
- Work effectively as a team member in the delivery of care and assist in the orientation of new employees.
- Direct and escort patients to other departments and/or healthcare settings, as needed.
- Obtain blood specimens for laboratory testing by performing venipuncture and/or fingerstick testing.
- Proficient in the use and maintenance of Infection Control protocol of electrocardiogram and glucose machines.
- Operate electrocardiograph equipment to perform EKG as ordered by the PMD.
- Basic knowledge of cardiac monitoring and rhythm.
- Central Station Cardiac monitoring.
Requirements include:
- Successful completion of a NYS Department of Health prescribed training program for Phlebotomy, satisfactory to the Laboratory Director.
- Completion of a healthcare setting-based training program in the performance of electrocardiographs and basic life support procedures, including certification in Cardio-Pulmonary Resuscitation.
- Assignment to a long-term care facility requires a New York State Nurse's Aide Certificate.
