Position Overview

This role within the Athletic Department is under the supervision of the Head Softball Coach and entails fulfilling the responsibilities associated with the assistant coaching position for the Softball program. The individual will collaborate with other members of the Athletics team to meet departmental and strategic objectives while upholding the University's Marianist Mission of education.


Key Responsibilities:

  • Instructs student-athletes on both the technical and motivational elements of softball.
  • Plans, organizes, and oversees practice sessions and training for softball student-athletes.
  • Engages in the recruitment of student-athletes who demonstrate the potential for success in academics, athletics, and social integration at St. Mary's University.
  • Facilitates the holistic development of each student-athlete in spiritual, academic, physical, and social dimensions.
  • Assists in the preparation, assessment, and upkeep of administrative and certification records for each softball athlete, including scheduling games, practices, and academic support.
  • Contributes to the formulation and management of the softball budget; aids in fundraising efforts to enhance the softball program's financial resources.
  • Supports the proper upkeep and maintenance of the practice and game fields.
  • Adheres to all policies and regulations set forth by St. Mary's University, the Lone Star Conference, and the NCAA.
  • Performs additional duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

  • A bachelor's degree from an accredited institution is preferred.
  • Prior experience in coaching softball at the high school or collegiate level is advantageous.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills are essential, along with basic computer proficiency. The ability to convey ideas and strategies effectively is required.
  • A valid driver's license, motor vehicle liability insurance, and personal injury insurance are necessary, along with completion of the University Van Driver Training within 90 days of employment.
  • Must successfully pass a background investigation and maintain clearance.
  • Flexibility to work during evenings, weekends, and holidays as required by sporting and non-sporting events; travel may be necessary.
  • Proficiency in MS Office applications (Word, Excel, Teams, and Outlook) is required; familiarity with virtual meeting platforms such as Zoom is preferred.
  • Ability to utilize technology for recruiting, film analysis, and scouting purposes.
  • Strong interpersonal skills are needed for effective communication with university departments, students, and prospective student-athletes; exceptional speaking and writing abilities are required.
  • Capability to collaborate effectively with faculty, staff, and students from diverse backgrounds.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work conditions are primarily in an office and university campus environment. The ability to navigate the campus for daily operations is necessary.
  • Regularly required to sit, walk, and stand; communicate in person and via telephone; and use hands repetitively for standard office tasks; may occasionally lift up to 40 pounds.
  • Specific vision capabilities required include close vision, distance vision, and the ability to adjust focus.
  • Frequent communication with others using approved technological resources; must exchange accurate information through designated systems promptly.
  • Constant operation of a computer and other office productivity equipment is expected.
