Job Overview

Position: Swine Technician

Location: Near Willow Lake, SD

Objective: To adhere to the directives of farm management and established protocols to optimize production, efficiency, and profitability.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Skill Development: Cultivate individual competencies based on the requirements of the designated work area.
    • Implement all production protocols to enhance sow and gilt output and efficiencies.
    • Acquire specialized skills essential for seamless workflow.
    • Become proficient in animal husbandry practices to minimize herd stress and maximize productivity.
    • Execute daily task sheets to meet production goals.
    • Accurately complete production documentation in a timely manner.
  • Effective Communication: Maintain clear communication with fellow employees and farm management.
    • Adhere to task sheets and timelines to ensure productivity throughout the workday.
    • Provide daily feedback to the area lead regarding production and animal health issues.
    • Understand how individual performance impacts the organization's financial health and collaborate with colleagues to enhance production and efficiency.
  • Documentation: Ensure timely and accurate completion of production paperwork.
    • Collaborate with farm management to finalize all work-related injury documentation and participate in accident investigations as necessary.
    • Maintain daily records of monitored production metrics.
  • Bio-Security Compliance: Follow all bio-security measures and report any compliance issues to the area lead.
    • Work with team members to rectify bio-security audit deficiencies promptly.
  • Safety Practices: Uphold all safety protocols and guidelines.
    • Ensure that all safety equipment is available and utilized appropriately.
    • Learn and apply accident prevention strategies in the designated area.
    • Consistently monitor animal welfare practices.
  • Ventilation Management: Monitor the ventilation system's functionality and provide feedback to the area lead to ensure optimal animal comfort.
  • Facility Upkeep: Maintain a clean and organized facility.
    • Complete assigned routine maintenance tasks daily.
    • Communicate any non-routine repair needs to the area lead.

Additional Responsibilities:

  • Perform other duties and projects as assigned by the area lead and farm management.

Qualifications:

Education: High School Diploma or GED preferred.

Experience:

  • No prior experience required.
  • 1+ years of livestock experience preferred with a high school diploma.

Training: Completion of My Pipestone New Hire Courses, including:

  • Introduction
  • Animal Welfare
  • Biosecurity
  • Employee Handbook
  • PQA
  • Safety

Additional training on animal welfare, biosecurity, and safety topics will be provided monthly, along with annual safety refresher training.

Work Environment:

  • Agricultural swine environment in a rural setting.
  • Exposure to noise levels requiring hearing protection in certain areas.
  • Involvement in gestation, farrowing, and small swine care processes.

Physical Requirements:

  • Ability to stand and walk for 8 to 10 hours daily.
  • Frequent bending, reaching, squatting, and kneeling.
  • Regular use of hands/arms for grasping or pulling.
  • Frequent lifting of objects weighing between 3-20 pounds.
  • Occasional lifting of heavier objects, up to 100 pounds, with assistance as needed.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills.
  • Ability to print and/or write legibly.

Additional Requirements:

  • Availability to work weekends.
  • Reliable transportation to the workplace.
